Finally: Tweed Deluxe 5e3 completed

Although I have to ask: is it still technically a tweed deluxe if there's not tweed? ;)

The electronics/chassis I've documented here many months ago.

The longest part, by far, was building the cab. I wanted to use locally-sourced wood. I used timber that I felled myself and then turned into planks, laminated (width-wise, not thickness-wise like plywood of course), cut to size, etc. myself.

What made the process so long is that I'm not equipped for such work (I could do it but I'm not well equipped, meaning it never would've come out as nice as it did) and had to go work over at my dad's workshop (he's become quite the woodworker) which is equipped with everything I needed and then some. He's not that far from us but still it involved having the kids taken care of by my wife or somebody else and only on week-ends that my agenda allowed. All in all it took about 4 months of working on it a couple of hours every other week-end. I was in no hurry so it's all good.

Therefore, let me present to you guys my 5e3. The only mod done is a master-volume, otherwise it's stock (I may have lowered the caps a bit to remove some woofyness though). Locally sourced solid birch, including the baffle. Eminence Wizard. JJ tubes.
Quite a nice little machine I must say.
Knobs were way too shiny and looked out of place, so I dipped 'em in chloridric acid a bit.

Here it is, enjoy:

The "tweed" nomenclature is just a convenient shorthand reference to a particular era of Fender amplifier production.

You know perfectly well that the schematic diagram revision number is the best indicator of the amplifier. Whilst your amp is not one hundred percent faithful to any single official Fender component list, those who care will understand what you have there and those who do not care will miss nothing.

IMO, your next project should be a Whizzer à la Neil Young.

Nice work. Having access to a wood shop is a luxury.

I like the look of rustic designs. What kind of wood is that?

Besides labor, how much do you have into it, if you don't mind me asking.

Re: Finally: Tweed Deluxe 5e3 completed

Funky: I know what it is.

Pdf: thank you

Jonesey: thanks. This is all solid birch (3/4"). Considering the timber was free (cut it myself), I have no more than 350$ canadian (a few months ago it didn't make much of a difference but it does at the moment) invested in parts, hardware and other small things. Besides the electronics, the cab didn't cost me more than the grill cloth and the hardware. I even had the speaker since I bought it about 10 years ago and pulled it out of the amp before selling it. Not bad imho.

Now all you need to do is build a log cabin in the woods to play it in! Whatever you do, NO tuck-n-roll! :D

I already live in the woods, on a lakeshore. The extension to the house we built last year is covered with pine... not log but still, you're pretty spot on! :D

very cool! love the natural wood look, what did you stain it with? i dont see the master volume, hidden somewhere? what tone caps did you end up with? i think i replaced the first .1's with .047 in mine to lose some of the woofy bass.

Thanks Jeremy!

The stain was a custom one made for my father and the girl at the store didn't write the recipe on it. It's a blend of different minwax stains. Very good looking on lighter woods IMHO.

The MV was set in the extension cab output jack spot, between the pre and power tubes. It's therefore invisible but I can reach it easily with my finger through one of the vent-holes on the back plate.

I ended-up with 0.047 as well, just perfect with humbuckers such as the Custom, which I use in all my Les Pauls, and yet not too thin with my teles.

I can't wait to try it out more, if I remember well you're quite fond of the g12h30 in yours and the Wizard is Emi's take on it. I've played the amp through my govnor-loaded 2x12 so far so it'll be fun to play it through this one.

Re: Finally: Tweed Deluxe 5e3 completed

nice! ive messed around with my 5e3 a lot and have pretty much returned it to stock other than the .047 caps and i do love the g12h for it. ive tried some other things but keep coming back to that g12h-30. i love the way an alnico speaker sounds in there but i lost a nos 6v6 when using an emi red fang cause the speaker was so close to the tubes when i banged the amp getting it in the car they kissed so no more of that. enjoy man, they are great sounding fun to play little amps!!

Yeah, I've tried a bunch of mods but other than the MV ('cause you know that the volume isn't that helpful on those, even with a log pot it's: silence, barely audible, max) I didn't feel the need for anything else but stock form.

Just my Emi is insanely close to the tubes, I can't imagine an alnico speaker being anything but close-basically touching the tubes.

It's my first fender-type amp, first combo in a while (and the first I've built) too. I'll sure have fun!

Re: Finally: Tweed Deluxe 5e3 completed

its a fender amp alright but nothing like the classic blackface reverb amps. so chewy and fat, its glorious!

the volumes are interactive even when only using one input so when you are plugged into the bright channel turning the normal channels volume will change the tone pretty drastically. turn the bright channel up to 3 and run through the whole sweep of the normal volume and youll see what i mean.

Yeah, I've experimented a lot with it so far but I'm far from mastering the thing and really know how to make it deliver everything it can. Thanks for the tips.

I found this video helpful to understand this interaction:
