Finding the perfect pick

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Steel wire-thing.

No other pick will stay in your hand as well.

Speed pickers heaven :D

But for a bass pick I'd try some dunlop teardrop shaped jazz picks.

I used the green or purple tortex for a long time, but for the last year or so I've liked the Pickboy meta cabonate's in 1.0 mm. Great point for fast stuff, but they wear fairly quickly. Just tried the Dunlop ultex, great feel but miss the pointiness of the pickboy's.

Maybe you should try the Dunlop Big Stubby 1mm... this is what I use. They last very long and are also very pointy.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

been using them green (.88) dunlop tortex triangle ones which are normally used for bass. recently got some 1mm ultex. can't really say if i prefer one over the other. but the ultex has a more prominent attack and they really last!

I'll check my stash, I might have one of those that I tried a long time ago. I see they have them in nylon now. Might be the cat's meow, thanks for the tip. :)

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Dunlop Ultex 1.14mm. Long life, articulate tone, nice and thick so they're easy to hold onto. Perfect for me :)

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I've been using the Ultex 1.0mm and I just bought a .73mm I think it was... one of the larger triangle ones. I've heard that triangles can be a little easier to hold onto, but I guess I'll just have to experiment and find out. Sometimes I go back to my green Tortex, and I have a Jazz III from a while back...

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Most anything over 1mm. Mostly stubbies: red, violet, dark purple. Depends on the mood. Stubbies last forever too. Used to use purple tortex. For jazz I use yellow tortex preferably.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

On bass I use some generic asymmetrical pick that I've had forever. It's about 1.5mm thick. I think that's the perfect thickness for bass, but I also like the fact that it's pretty big area-wise as well. On guitar I use red Jazz IIIs for electric and fender mediums for acoustic, but I want to try the tortex jazz picks.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I use Fender 346s in Heavy or Extra Heavy and I use them on guitar, bass, mandolin, whatever.

I use these:

They are a bit pointier than a regular Tortex, but not as pointy as a Sharp. I can only find them in one store. They've promised to keep me supplied. I buy them by the dozen...

Re: Finding the perfect pick

ive used various picks but i always come back and stick to my trusty dunlop tortex .60mm (the orange picks)

Re: Finding the perfect pick

:smokin: good lord i didn't realize there would be a thread on this subject but i'm glad there is -- i recently started using the pickboy metacarbonate 1.oo's, and i've never liked a pick as much! gonna get a bunch of them -- i like them even better than my ground down quarters that some guy on ebay sells, because they're a lot lighter..........

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I mainly use the Green and Blue Dunlop Tortex for electric and the Orange and Yellow Tortex for Acoustic guitar.

Just lately though I've been really getting into .88mm and .96mm thick Celluloid picks for electric guitar.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Dunlop Tortex here also. Most of the time I use .60's, but I also like the 1.0mm's and very rarely, the 1.14's when I really want some "spank".

They're all the triangle ones, with rounded corners.

btw - generally, when I'm playing my Tele, I use the side of my thumb and nail. Gives me a little better control over the "twang".

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I used the Dunlop Tortex for a while then switched to the Ultex and thought that was the holy grail of picks till Dean of Snake Oil strings pointed me to Celluloid picks made by a small German company called Pyramid. Now, nothing comes even close to the feel and control of these for me....plus after doing side by side comparisons these Pyramids give a cleaner tone and better articulation and my tone is actually louder, more pronounced and way more accurate and clear. Good stuff.

Now, I wonder if I could try those Dunlop Celluloid picks abd have the same result. I may try those.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I use those sharp dunlop tortex 1,5mm picks, white ones. I had a real revelation when I first tried my sharp one, and I really don't want to use others. I bought a bag of 72 a couple of years ago, and I haven't been without a pick since.

I think that I'll try out the 1,14 ones too, and maybe those Pyramids, at least if I can find sharp ones of those.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Ditto on the Tortex... I use the 1.0 (Blue) and 1.14mm (Purple). I like a firm, sturdy pick... I could never understand how anybody could use thin picks for rhythm and leads... to each his own...
