Re: finicky guitars?? do you have one?
I had a couple.
A Dean Deceiver that I just never felt totally comfortable with. It neck dived like a mofo. Never felt right in my hands. I'd set up the floyd perfectly, and I mean perfectly. Play something, not use the whammy bar, and it'd be out of tune, all the time. I got rid of it and never felt better.
My Ibanez SAS32EX. It wasn't finicky in the playing department. On the contrary, it held tune phenomenally well considering it was a standard nut, non-locking tuners, and a non-locking 2-pivot tremolo. I could divebomb like crazy, let go of the whammy bar and it'd be like one or two cents off on maybe the b string. But finding pickups that worked for that guitar was SUCH a nuisance. I actually never did find a combination I liked. Stock pickups were thin, lacked output, lacked character, just all around weak ass. Custom5/Jazz was hollow and meatless. Custom/Jazz was better, but sounded too constrained and uptight. Distortion/Humbucker from Hell sounded pretty good but not nearly enough high end scream and cut. X2N/PAF Pro sounded pretty damn good, but almost too much low end on the X2N and too few mids from the PAF Pro, also not enough highs. Ended up just throwing the stock Epi humbuckers from my old SG in there and sold it as fast as I could.
