A wee bit of background is in order:
I'd Googled various questions on the topic of "build your own guitar," and they all lead back to here. So after a few dozen forum searches, I had everything I needed to know about neck pockets, fit, truss rod adjustments and fret buzz from the great little community.
I had a KH-202 neck sitting around, and I bought a little Schecter SGR C-1 body off of eBay. It took quite a bit of creative sanding to get the neck to actually fit in the pocket as well as being straight. I must've filled and re-filled screw holes a half dozen times. I finally got it right and threw some DR .10-.56s on there. I got the neck straight, strings admirably low (sans buzz), and slapped any intonation issues down. The results are a pretty cool first time axe with absolutely horrendous sounding pickups. I dubbed the beaut "Guitarmageddon."
My points are thus - 01. Anyone can do these project guitars. Even if the guitar had "failed," I learned so much today about setups that I learned how pocket GC's $75 set up fee for any guitar I have in the future by doing it myself. There is a LOT of knowledge on this board; a straight edge and a business card will get you far in setups. 02. The SGR pickups by Schecter are worth every penny of their $8 tag on eBay, because they suck. Hard. They have to be two of the muddiest, underwhelming humbuckers I've ever heard. And yes, I read enough to know about adjusting pickups, there just isn't a sweet spot for these things.
Here's the finished product. I do have a plan for the nut as well if anyone's wondering.
