Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

I think it is pretty awesome. The guitar, the arrangement, and writing and the your skill at programming the drums is all simply top notch. I can't think of how I'd improve it or anything. Tremendous work bro.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

I like the new ending, it's big and dramatic! When I listened to this song I immediately thought "big climactic ending" instead of "repeat and fade out," and you delivered!

Like U2 albums, right?

Jeff, there's definitely a big improvement in the song/mix since the last time I listened to it a couple days ago. It sounds really good. Vocals would fill some of the gaps, but overall, it's not repetitive or boring. It's obvious that you've spent much more time on this song than some of your others. Hopefully you'll go back and invest the same attention to your other songs because they all have so much potential. Anyway, keep at it.

My problem is that I can't decide what kind of vocals I'd want to go on top. I don't want a guy who sounds like Dickenson or Halford, as that wouldn't really fly with me, and it'd been done way too many times before. Straight growls would ruin it for people, but it's what I listen to the most.

Why settle for just one or the other? :scratchch

What were your settings for the clean guitar? I have terrible luck layering clean over distortion, but you did (as always) a helluva job.

Holy ****, that would kickass. That guy has seriously awesome vocals, I think that would work great over my stuff!

It reminded me of one of my favorite techniques that not enough bands use: Layering clean vocals ontop of a growl. Lots of bands layer a scream over a growl, and while that sounds menacing as hell, theres something about a clean voice over a guttural low like that that just hits me in the perfect spot.

As far as clean guitars - it's just a DI'd bridge 707. Seriously, I turn off the amp modelling on my POD and just use it as a DI. For this song, though, I rolled off a lot of lows and boosted the upper midrange and high end quite a bit, made it pop out nicely and balance with the rest of everything very well.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Okay I gave those youtube vids a second chance, the second one is cool. I don't dig the first one.

Jeff, listen to some Jag Panzer for some killer clean vocals over 7 string stuff.

Big fan of the Panzer and Chris Broderick, not a fan of the vocals so much. Power metal vocals are cool to listen to sometimes, but definately don't fly over my music.

Which guy? The first band has two vocalists (one clean, one harmonies & growls), and the second band has three or four (counting lead-singing instrumentalists) depending on the line-up. :laugh2:

I enjoy a good scream-over-growl, but more as a special effect than a vocal delivery. No lyrics, just a good, hearty rip when, say, going into a blast beat section. And no more than twice per full length album. Gets old fast.

My main pre-metal influences were the Beatles and King's X, so I'm a sucker for just about anything with multiple vocalists (Ayreon/Star One, Into Eternity) or multiple styles out of one singer (Dan Swano).

Just yesterday I tried using my POD as a speaker simulator for an outboard preamp for the first time. Didn't work so well, but I probably need more time to sit and tweak.

For DI-ing, did you set it to 'Tube Preamp' or to 'No Amp'? Whereabouts did you roll off / boost?

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Ah I only watched the first, wasn't aware it was two guys!

I know what you mean about as an effect... I like it in a chorus when you need some punch in there, something added. It's like harmonizing clean vocals.

Set to 'no amp,' if you devide the EQ spectrum in half, there was a steady 45 degree angle that stopped midway upwards and downwards, like a giant S that never curved around.

LoL I thought that too the first couple times I watched it, even though I already knew they had two vocalists. It certainly doesn't help that they're dressed the same in the video and never shown fronting the band at the same time. The original ratio version on their site makes it a little easier...

Collar-length hair is Niko (clean vox), past-the-shoulder length is Juha (harmony & growls)

Getting both styles out of one vocalist is cool, but it would make for less flexibility, especially trying to pull things off live. And there are lots of guys who are good at one but just okay at the other (I'm looking at you, Mr. Strid), but IMO only two guys good at both: Dan Swano, and Christian Alvestam (who should be paying Swano royalties).

Here's another multi-singer example (including Speed)...

so many singers, the poor girl needs an exorcist

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Yeah I really like this song too, and I don't even like metal. But as soon as the harmony came in the 3 minute mark solo, I was sold. It sounded kinda like Avenged Sevenfold, how they do the two guitar harmony. VERY nice.

Nice work bro!

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Ahhh ok... that explains it.

Come on man, SS is so awesome! Awesome screams and great cleans, IMO.

I wouldn't mind just one dude live - I've done and can do backup growls, so that's not a real issue...

But, you're forgetting Mikael Akerfeldt. That man is God.

Been waiting for the new Disarmonia Mundi for a bit now, but Speed isn't going to be on it, I guess. :(

As for being compared to Avenged Sevenfold... :earl:

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Jeff, I only have one word for you:

WOW!

Killer song, bro. Keep up the good work.

I swear, about 30 seconds into it I could smell the distinct scent of marijuana smoke (ain't it amazing how the brain associates certain memories?).
