my new warmoth alder strat with a koa top is unfinished. i have been looking at many clear finishes. all i need is protection and i want the wood texture to be there. im leaning towards tung oil. will this protect the wood, and if not, what should i use?

Great products, great instructions, great customer service. I'm not affliated with them, I've just used their products for several projects and I believe in recommending quality products/companies.

ReRanch is great, but nitro (or poly) lacquer is NOT the ticket if you want to keep the wood grain IMHO.

Tung oil might work just fine.

I've finished a neck by brushing on a couple coats of clear shellac, sanding, then wiping on TruOil from Birchwood Casey. The shellac gives you a water barrier, and the TruOil is a polymerized linseed oil (whatever that means) that you can use to build up a thin finish and can buff as shiny as you want.

I did a lot of research on this before using TruOil, but the Musical Instrument Makers Forum "Library" has a wealth of knowledge. Being lazy tonight, I've also posted some useful links about TruOil in the last month or so.

If you use an oil finish, try sanding the wood a lot and really fine. I went up to at least 600 on that neck and it really helped "pop" the grain. (Don't go much past 220 with lacquer 'coz it needs a rougher finish to adhere to.)
