First Act

So what seems to be the consensus on these guitars? Are they merely cool/weird looking guitars, or do they play/sound nice. I was looking at some pics of Matt Pike's (High on Fire) 9 string from them and started GAS'ing hard. I'd love to own something like his (not necessarily a 9 stringer).

Here it is:

That thing is sweet and sounds killer. Anybody own a first act here?

Re: First Act

They've got a ton of cheap imports that they sell at Wal-Mart, and a really good custom shop...so it's not as if that's the Matt Pike Signature First Act that you can buy for yourself, that's Matt Pike's custom First Act.

I don't know anything about their custom shop's prices or anything, but they gave Matt Pike and Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE) their own custom guitars so they're at least endorsing really good underground bands that deserve it, which is respectable.

I wish they'd make the custom guitars available for purchase tho. That 9-string is dope.

Re: First Act

I played a 'rock-star' owned semi-hollow First Act that was a really really great instrument. Up there with anything 'G' or 'F' is turning out around the $2000 mark...

I've also plunked around on one of those 'Volkswagon' guitars at a Vdub dealer and it was a pretty steamy pile of poo. Frets popping outta the wood likea cheese grator, cheap rattling hardware... sounded like a banjo & played like a $100 guitar.

So... well. I don't know if that helps any now does it?

I too wish they'd just release those guitars as signature models. Kurt Ballou and Pike are a cpl of really cool players and I love both of their bands (Converge is an all time fave). I actually emailed First Act a little while ago tonight about Pike's guitar. I asked them if they could/would build one and how much, but for a 6 stringer (I don't really need or want a 9). I also asked about their duomag pups that are in Pike's axe and if they'd sell a set. I think it would be interesting to try a set in a LP guitar, if they work for Pike, they can't be half bad.

Re: First Act

That 9 string is effing ace. If you like it, but want one in a 6 string, check out the Yamaha SGs. They are cool, and look pretty similar.

Re: First Act

Brent Hinds from Mastodon has a very cool heavy metal mosrite-esque first act. Very cool indeed.

Nothing else needs said:

Re: First Act

that rick nielsen guitar is cool he has the coolest guitars, if any of you guys watch the Colbert Report he was on and he loaned Stephen one it was the wildest guitar ever!

Bret Hinds has a cool guitar there too.

Re: First Act

He's got something I've always wanted... a custom-made neck-thru Mosrite type guitar with modern appointments and electronics.

Re: First Act

Ya, Hinds guitar is pretty rad too. I would love to get my hands on an axe like the one Hinds, or Pike has, either would be pretty dope, imo. I'm guessing a custom shop first act is kinda expensive tho, judging from the fact that their top models go for like $1500.

I just looked up the yahaha SGBs and they look pretty f'in close. The sgb2000
is almost exactly like Pike's axe. The shape, pup config and inlays are all the same. You can get one in the same finish too. The only problem I see, is I can't find anyone who sells the sgb2000 new, there's vintage ones on the bay, but I have a feeling they go for pretty good money. I might have found ny next guitar, we'll see. I'll have to wait anyways, I've spent entirely too much on gear this yr and my bank account is showing it.

That 9 string is one of the coolest guitars I've seen in a long time.

Too bad I can't try it out.

$2500 & up apparently...

There's a 'custom shop' vitural builder on the site, gives a list price at the end of the 'build'.

I guess those are outta the question, I think I could probly do better for that kinda dough. I could get 2 REALLY nice edwards or vintage MIJ les paul copies for that much. The yamaha on the other hand, looks really cool and some are even neck thru (sgb2000) which would be pretty sweet.

Re: First Act

Hmmm... maybe. Guess it depends on where your personal dividing line on 'quality' divides.

I like ESP's a whole lot... Killer guitars. No doubt. I also like my $300 rides as much as any of the expensive 'G' & 'F' guitars I've played & owned, which have been many.

But I dunno... not sure an Edwards or Tokai could compare with the 'artist' custom First Act I played.

It's a whole other camp really.

I hear ya on that, but I really can't spend that much on an axe, at least not anytime soon. Where did you get a chance to play an artist custom 1st act? Which one was it btw?

Re: First Act

This is a rumor, mind you, but I heard (read actually) that First Act's Custom Shop is actually Gibson.

Re: First Act

There is an interview with the main man from First Act in this month's guitarist magazine. He used to work for Gibson, but First Act is a totally seperate company with different premesis and staff.

I was passing through Big Blue Meenie a while ago and one of the kids from working in studio 'B' owned it, a semi-hollow with 2-buckers & stoptail.

Going through there when they're doing guitars overdubs is a whole lotta fun... 30+ guitars, 20+ amp heads... hundreds of pedals... good stuff.

Can't remember who it was though! Some emo/screamo band...
