First Ever Strat Build!!!

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

the neck i got from USACG that was finished had too thick of a satin finish on it and it was a pain to get off. i spent tons of hours literally to sand it off as well as using real strong laquer remover. I dont know what they used on it whether it was poly or what but it muted the neck alot in a bad way.
All the unfinished neck i got from them though were great.
I also want to try Warmoth and see how their necks are as well. But i will never get another finished neck from any of these guys.

The only finished necks i have seen that are awesome are Suhrs. those are so well done they feel like they have no finish at all.

Also if the neck is too thick it will take ALOT of sanding to get it down to size.

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

if was too thick man...i'd send it back!

already sanded it down.... took about an hour and now it feels right... i think im going to leave it with no finish... feels real nce like my old wolfgang... any thoughts or tips on keeping it clean?

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

I'd put a few coats of tongue oil on it. It will give it some moisture protection and it will keep it from dirtying up to easily.

if you want it to last then it really needs some sort of finish. id recommend tru-oil from birchwood casey if you dont want to lacquer it. Maple necks need to be finished because the moisture will seep in and literally rot the wood from the inside out.

Woods like rosewood dont need finished because they are naturally oily enough to keep most moisture out.

That sounds good.... What should i get? The oil or the aerosol can? And how much do you think ill need for just the back of a neck?

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

Richard, get the oil and wipe it on with an old white cotton t-shirt. Lightly buff it with some 0000 steel wool after a couple coats, then add a couple more coats, light buff, then a final coat. Let each coat dry completely. I did this exact thing using MinWax Poly Satin on a Warmoth neck with great results. Smooth as silk.

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

OK! I got the nut shim in and it plays alot better now. that homemade shim was to thick. I bought 3 shims, .1mm .2mm and .3mm. it took the .2mm shim to make it right. It needs a good fret leveling to get the action down to where i like it and on the 11th fret if I bend the high E a little over a half step it frets out. its not bothering me to bad so im going to w8 till i have the money to buy the tools to level the frets myself... Thats something i want to learn how to do anyways. when my hands are on the strings or on something metal, there is little to no noies. and when im not touching the strings or anything metal its quiet also but, as im touching the strings or something metal it pops a little. kind of hard to explain.. as soon as i touch something thats grounded it has a small poping noies in the amp... im going to check all my grounds when i chang strings. Now onto the way she sounds... NICE!!!! this body resonates for days and is light as a feather. its a little brighter then my schecter PT so i have to reset my EQ on my amp. Id have to say that this guitar sustains better then my old wolfgang, sounds better then my old wolfgang and plays better then my old wolfgang and my old american standard strat. I will never sell this one guys... its a keeper

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

Hey man!

Glad to see it turned out right.
Looks killer too!!!

About the neck contour, I've played several Hellraisers (as well as other Schecters) and I could tell you that their necks are thicker than how they feel.
The "secret" to make them feel thinner is the contour they use.
That's probably why the USACG neck felt different (different contour).

Getting two necks to feel exactly right is near impossible unless the one that makes the 2nd one has all the measurements of the first one (not one like it, I mean that exact neck!)

Will be waiting to hear how it'll turn out after the final touches but I must say that it looks as if you've got sth special right there!!!

The Warmoth Strat neck I have has thin matt finish and I like it a lot. The guitar is very far from ready, though.

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!

+1.. Leave it to the professionals... This isn't a cheap Squire......

already did it and its perfect. Feels even better the I thought it would. Like I said it took about an hour with one of those vibrating hand sanders. I used 220 grit paper untill it felt right. and after that i used 1000, 1500 and 2000 just to smooth it out. i could not be happier with it. I still need to get that tru-oil and finish it.

Re: First Ever Strat Build!!!
