First guitar

The other thread about the value of overseas-made guitars got me thinking and took me on a trip down memory lane. I found this pic online of my first electric-the Samick “scandal.”

I don’t even remember how much it was. But like $300 or so. A whole summer’s worth of mowing lawns in about ‘92 or so.
samick’s version of the Ibanez S series. Bound fretboard, painted headstock, and a scarf joint heel. Incredible features for peanuts—just a few years before Korean guitars were expensive mid-level guitars, and they were still the cheapies.

Then a year or two later I traded it in for a used charvette that had a jt6 licensed floyd (and the white/red/black splatter paint job).

Mine was a Japanese-made Kent SG. One of the first guitars I ripped apart. I soon learned there was only one coil under that pickup cover.

My first guitar was in 1982 or so. A loaner from the daughter of a friend of my father. A (circa 1960 I think) Stella acoustic. The fretboard was actually concave! Looked like this as I remember. The bridge wasn't fixed to the body so I just kind of took a guess where it was supposed to go after putting strings on it. I remember putting a few strings on backwards at the pegs but that didn't matter too much as the pegs barely turned anyway. Lord knows how I managed to kinda sorta almost get it into close to being in tune. But I couldn't play chords then so only one note at a time who really needs to be in tune.

My first guitar is this Epiphone Dot:

Bit of a Theseus' ship thing going on though . . . replaced the tuners (gotoh), the pickups ('59 N and Seth bridge), the pickguard, pots and caps, pickup rings, strap buttons for Schaller straplocks, bridge and tailpiece (tone pros). Three fret dresses over about 10 years and the frets were shot, so I refretted her. Still sounds great and plays well.

first guitar was a squier ii contemporary strat in black. actually a decent guitar for $200 back in the early 90's. got it for christmas but didnt have an amp till my birthday in march so put lots of hours plinking unplugged on my bedroom floor

My first was a black Hohner strat copy.

Love the Samick stuff. I picked up one of their basses the other day and would really like to score a good TV 20 at some point

My first bass was a Magnatone Hurricane bass back in 1975 - purchased used for $100. Someone had stripped the original finish, and done it in tung oil, replaced the pickguard, and lost the covers. Being of a mechanical bent from an early age, it took me about 3 weeks before I pulled it all apart to see how it worked. I told myself - this is what I want to do from now on. I learned how to refret (once a month, for practice) and refinish on this bass (every other month a different color). I made multiple pickguards, routed it for different pickups through the years. It was my guinea pig, and became my 2nd bass after I bought a 4001. I gigged with it, and played the crap out of it. Finally sold it sometime in the 80's to a bass student. I wonder whatever happened to it. One of these days I'll try to replicate it in a dream version.

My first guitar was an acoustic with action probably about 1/4" to 1/2" high. The brand was Marinucci. I didn't buy/own an electric guitar until I was 31 or 32. It is a Mexican made Squier Telecaster that I bought in 1999 for $149. It is a fantastic guitar, and I still own and play it. I remember going to Mars Music and playing just about every guitar on the wall, and I kept on going back to that Squier Telecaster. The only thing that I've done to it is put a set of Duncan Quarter Pounders in it. I kind of wish that I would have left it stock because it sounded great as it was.

First guitar I ever played was my mom's Yamaha Classical which I now own.

First guitar I bought for myself is the Squier Strat on the left in the attached picture. I modded it with the help of a teacher's husband. It now belongs to a friend of mine who plays it often.

My first was a Sears stratocaster. Maple neck, plywood body, SSS, 6-point strat bridge with brass saddles. As good as you could get for $99 or whatever it was. Every setting and sound on it was disappointing. The neck broke in high school. I still have the body. It has a Yamaha SE612 neck on it. Not really playable. More of a place to store parts. That actually a real Floyd on there at the moment.

Mine was a K Mart Special Tiesco with a matching amp. A real POS that was impossible to play. After a few months of trying to play that nightmare I got a I got a red Fender Music Master and Vibro Champ amp that was my first usable guitar and amp. We fried that old Tesco amp years later after chaining a bunch of LPB1 boosters into it.

Mine was a Lark 100 acoustic. Because, you had to learn acoustic for two years before learning electric. What bool sheet!

My first electric was a 1979 Les Paul Standard. I have to say my parents were both crazy and awesome for that. $500. Still have it today.
