First impressions of Duncan designed neck pickup

to me the main focus of my pickups is the bridge, which is a JB. ive had a stock no name pickup in the neck since i bought the schecter blackhawk guitar, they sounded..ok but didnt really have any voicing or specific style for anything. so instead of spending a bunch of money on a SD neck pickup i tried to win a DDesigned neck pickup, which was the duncan distorion neck copy.
right away i could hear the more definded process in the making of the pickup compared to the stock pickup, it was more focused, clearer and bigger. im not saying in anyway that the quality is any better than the real SD pickups, but if you dont really care about your neck that much try spending $11 shipped on a duncan distortion neck HB103N on ebay, works for me! only SD i would of bought anyways for the neck would of been the full shred, which if i ever get serious about the neck ill splurge on it.

I'd assume that a Duncan Designed pup is not a complete piece of poo. But, when you get to be my age, you realize that you'll probably end up upgrading to the real thing eventually anyway, so I just get the real Duncans the first time.

Re: First impressions of Duncan designed neck pickup

I believe that the HB103N is more towards a 59 than a Distortion neck. They measure out about 8k, Distortion Neck measures about 12k.

Don't let people tell you that the Duncan Designed sucks, try them yourself. I sold my JB and Distortion Bridge and kept the HB102b and HB103b.

I've had a bunch of those in past Schecters....definetly closer to a 59......I always thought they sounded pretty good and had people comment on how how surprisingly good they sounded.

Re: First impressions of Duncan designed neck pickup

yeah i think your right that there closer to a 59 output. nice sound going on with the cleans. very nice.

I personally love the fact you get a good sounding pick up with a taste of duncan at a great price. You can't beat the deal!

Re: First impressions of Duncan designed neck pickup

My HB103N measures 8.13K. It sounds beatifully with an A5 magnet, and because it's a slightly dark wind, it sounds like a '59 with an A4 magnet, which I find it's the perfect magnet for a neck p'up.

Pair it with either a HB102B or a HB103B with an A8 magnet and you have a winner set.

Specially the "both on" tone produced is to die for.

This combo works wonders in SGs and LPs and it excels in semihollows. Yes, you read right. 335s sound great with these p'ups, specially if you play classic rock and blues.
