I currently own one microphone. It is a toy. Right now I can buy an SM57 for $100 or a decent condenser mic with switchable pickup patterns, bass roll-off, and attenuation, that's $200. I'd rather not buy both right now.

Which would you get more mileage out of for recording guitars?

Re: First mic

I guess I was in the mood for an entry-level condenser. I can get an SM57 anytime.

I'd still like to hear from people, as I'll eventually be buying more mics beyond just these two.

Re: First mic

I started buying all cheap mics and regret it, especially in regards to condensers. Not saying you need to spend thousands though either. What models you looking at?

Re: First mic

What exactly is the condensor? E.g. If it's a Rode, those are ok. If it's something else, might not be worth it. But it depends - what is it?

Rodes are pretty solid cheap mics. I know a lot of people that swear by them.

I'd go with the SM57 myself.

Re: First mic

Well, you've seen one cheap mic, you've seen 'em all. I'm considering a Sennheiser MK4, a Sennheiser e906, an MXL 5000, an MXL990, an AKG P420, a Shure SM57, a Shure Beta 57A, a Rode NT1-A, a Rode NT2-A, an Audio-Technica ATR1200, and a Blue Snowball iCE.

Re: First mic

I have a Shure Beta 57A as sort of an "everything mic" and it's decent. I use it to mic my cajon if I'm doing a solo acoustic gig but it's also good for mic'ing my amp and for vocals when I've forgotten or misplaced the mics I usually use for those jobs. If memory serves it was around $100 and I consider it to have been a good investment.

Re: First mic

They're about a buck-forty now. A pretty affordable mic. A fellow told me today he thought it was "twice as good" as an SM57.

I've not used the MXL 990, the ATR1200, or the Blue. Everything else is a solid microphone though. If you're wanting to get a condensor, then the Rodes are solid.

I don't know about "twice as good," but I remember that it was supposedly designed to be sort of an SM57 on steroids (i.e. more versatile). I've never owned an SM57 to make a decent comparison, but mine seems to be living up to its performance claims.

Re: First mic

I've been looking into the e906. I like what I hear at least for close micing a cab. You just hang it over the front. I think that a condenser would be better placed a few feet back and get more room sound.
I think that the best would be to use both simultaneously for two tracks that you can mix together.

Re: First mic

Does it have a low cut ( rumble ) filter switch?- essential if you don't want to pick up street traffic or the AC turning on and such. For my money Musiciaans Friend Stupid Deal MXR's are the best, you just gotta jump on em when they put em up. .

AKG makes some real entry level junk, as well as top of the line stuff.

BTW, is the diaphragm "Gold Sputtered"? I have no idea what that even means, but dammit, I want it!

Re: First mic

It has a rumble filter.
It has a -20dB attenuation pad.
It has three switchable pickup patterns.
It has a shock mount and a case.
It has a gold sputtered diaphragm.

I used to have a Perception 100, and I liked the results I got with it.

Re: First mic

I've not tried them on vocals but we miked a bass player with that the other day and it was really clear and defined, which is huge for bass.

If you decide that you want to add a dynamic mic to your arsenal, save the money and get an RE20. Best dynamic I've ever used.

Would it be your first choice for guitar amps? I am thinking of getting an SM57 on my next shopping excursion, for the "industry standard" appeal, but I'm not opposed to something that might make for better recordings.
