Re: First mic

MMM! Nice

Really similar to the Rhode NT2a in specs and price.

Here the Rode is twice the price of the AKG. I'm sure the Rode is a better mic, but a bird in the hand. And I'm sure for another $200 there are better mics than the Rode, and so on. Between my playing and my home studio skills, I don't think a $200 mic is going to be the limiting factor.

Right , if I want one of them [AKG] I'll get you to buy it in the USA and send it to me.

Re: First mic

Would it be your first choice for guitar amps? I am thinking of getting an SM57 on my next shopping excursion, for the "industry standard" appeal, but I'm not opposed to something that might make for better recordings.

I've never used it on guiar, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Re: First mic

My three favourite mic's for mic'ing electric guitar are the SM57, the Cascade Fat Head II, and the Sennheiser MD 421. At the end of the day, the mic is far less important than what you do with it, and far less important than the mic preamp in my opinion.

Again, I have toys. What would be a good match for an SM57 and the AKG (or better)? I like to be able to run two mics at the same time, one with phantom power and one without. In the past I have done this using an inexpensive preamp and a mixer.

Well, you can use phantom power on both microphones, it won't hurt anything.

The classic combination for an SM57 is an api or Neve style preamplifier; personally, I use SSL Alpha Channels because they make the guitars sound HUGE. Good affordable alternatives are available from Black Lion, JDK, Golden Age, and Warm Audio. If you want super clean go with True Systems, Millennium, or Earthworks, but I don't think this is what your are looking for. I have heard that the Daking Mic Pre One is really good, essentially the sound of a Trident input module in a box, but I've never used one.

If you want to go SUPER swish, look into Chandler's EMI and Germanium preamps. The Germanium preamp costs the same as the SSL but is not a channel strip. I owned one for a couple of years but prefer the SSL sound.

Mackie preamps are excellent, forget the 'for the money' moniker that snobs like to throw at it. So are Focusrite. I really don't like how ART smears the sound and thins things out.

Re: First mic

So the budget Mackie probably has better mic preamps than the ART standalone preamp?

Re: First mic

72 hours and a 300% restocking fee.

Okay, no.

Re: First mic

How sorry would I be if I bought this? Is it weird that the word "Vintage" is on the front of the unit?

Golden Age Project Pre-73 MkIII
That is a Neve 1073 clone; I borrowed a friend's for about a year and got some very good results with it; it's KILLER as a DI for bass. With an SM57 it has an instantly recognizable sound. I find it to be a bit too chewy for my tastes, but there are tons of people out there who love it to pieces.

Re: First mic

I currently own one microphone. It is a toy. Right now I can buy an SM57 for $100 or a decent condenser mic with switchable pickup patterns, bass roll-off, and attenuation, that's $200. I'd rather not buy both right now.

Which would you get more mileage out of for recording guitars?
Get an SM57.

When I'm not using IRs in my DAW I'll mic one of my cabs with an SM57 straight on the cone and put one of my MXL 990's about 6 feet away. I have two of the regular 990. This is the Blizzard version.

There's a version that comes with a shock mount and a case. I like cases for mics.
