Thought I would share...

Life, in all its ups and downs (which are well-known), has delayed this project for considerably longer than I think anyone expected, but we are at last in the final stages of bringing out this album. This is the first of 10 tracks to be released that will be part of the record.

This community has never been anything less than tremendously uplifting & supportive of me and this project, for which I am extremely appreciative! Please listen and don't hesitate to share your thoughts.

Re: First New Devils of Belgrade song in 5 years

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words. I'm thinking of posting a new track about every week or so for the next few weeks. That sound like a good idea?

Re: First New Devils of Belgrade song in 5 years

Great stuff. Lots of melodies to satisfy. Sounds like a great tune to listen on an autumn day.

Re: First New Devils of Belgrade song in 5 years

Thanks guys.

It's funny how you can listen to a track a hundred times, but the minute you share it & it gets heard by other people, you start listening as a listener again. It wasn't until I posted this song here that I went "Wow, we really did put a lot of guitar solos in this song. I hope it's not too many!"

Totally. I'm down if you are.

I'm gonna take a listen to this when I get home. :D

GOD DAYEM!!!!!!!!!
First off, the freaking sound quality is smoking!! I always thought that the last thing yall put out was a little "clouded" or "dark" or something guitar soundwise. I thought the writing was great, but I just couldn't get over the "covered blanket" sound on the guitars. However, this....wow!! i'm talking every frequency that I want to hear is straight in my ears. Maybe it's the Kemper? I don't know, but the tone of everything is just absolutely fantastic.

The songwriting....lol. Well, we both know that's just straight up badass. I don't think there is much I can say about it....lol

The band's playing? Well..........I probably should have gone over to my parents' house first and see if they still had any cloth diapers from when I was a baby. I came pretty close to sh!ttin my pants. I'm 48. I played in a pretty big band around here for 12 years. I had alot of sex with hot chicks back then. I had a small amount of sex with hot chicks in high school as well, but I don't think any of them were as tight as yall's playing. Geez Louise!!

The creaminess of those leads were just that....Creamy and amazing sounding.

I really don't even know what else in the hell to say.

I was expecting to be blown away as usual, but I was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond NOT DISSAPOINTED!!

Are you sure that isn't the whole album? That covers a lot of ground and it's all good ... or great. Very precise guitar work and excellent tones!!!!! My ears are happy and they're not bleeding.

It's hard to pick a favorite part, and I don't know who's who in your group, but that solo starting around 4:30 is smokin' and it is in a zone that I love. Great style!

Many thanks, man!

The solo that starts right there is Scott, my co-guitarist. He takes the first two back-to-back solos over the clean & first distorted part, and then the last two leads that are split up are mine.

The whole album is like this, in that it's pretty eclectic and ideas aren't repeated much. It kind of goes forward in movements instead of traditional structure. Not all the songs are 7+ minutes though!

GOD DAYEM!!!!!!!!!

I'm speechless, man. :) That's about the highest order of praise I think I could ever hope to receive .

We're very proud of this effort. It's bittersweet, because Todd is gone, but it still means the world to us.

As for the sound, part of it might be the Kemper for the guitar tones but mostly it's because 1. We get a bit better at this every time around and 2. We've been mixing this damned thing for over a year, on and off. It's like freaking Chinese Democracy at this point.

Adding Scott to the lineup was a huge inspiration booster too and we didn't hold back showcasing his obvious talents, which is why I only play about half the solos on this record (and I'm glad). There's nothing better than playing with people who push you to get better.

Thanks again for the kind words, I don't take them for granted.

Re: First New Devils of Belgrade song in 5 years

I believe thats brilliant. Do you all read music, do you record bits and pieces at a time and splice them together,,or do you memorize all that by heart?
Thats some of the greatest modern music I think I've ever heard, very cerebral, but not just intricate for the sake of complexity- it doesn't ever lose sight of the ultimate truth, which is to jackhammer Asphalt ( I meant, Jackhammer Concrete).
Love it. Hope you guys soar to great heights with this one. I think this one earns you the right to open for a national act.
I'll have my ears perked for more of this, that's a given, plus that awesome title track is gonna get many more listens by me.

It's what "Chinese Democracy" was striving for.

Re: First New Devils of Belgrade song in 5 years

Very pleasantly surprised!

My only gripe? The guitar shots around 00:44 are too loud for my liking. Distracting to the riff rather than supporting it IMO. Not bad for my only one eh? haha.

Tones sound great, and playing seems top notch. Can you give us more insight into the recording process? All instruments please.

Thanks Jerry - that's very nice of you to say. :)

Scott knows theory, and I think Marshall (our bass player) knows a little, but Todd didn't know a lick of it and really neither do I.

I wrote this particular song and made a demo, which the other guys added their input to, and we learned as a band. There was no sheet music involved, and this is one that we played live quite a few times. To record, we did it the normal way - live drums, overdubbed the other instruments, etc.

Very pleasantly surprised!

Thank you!

We recorded the drums live in a huge abandoned theater in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We were the only people in there, and took up a mobile DAW rig (which ran, along with the lights, off of a single working outlet!), built a tent around the drumset in the middle of the main theater hall which we mounted microphones to. Todd played the drums for the entire album in 2 and a half days. One day I'll have to share the raw room mic tracks with you guys - the reverb was insane in there. Otherworldly.

We then recorded all the other stuff to the drum stems in parts, going a combination of direct and mic'd cab for the bass, and using a Kemper for the vast majority of guitar parts, going live amp for things where feedback / interaction were needed.

For this song, I think we used mostly the profiles made from my Splawn Pro Mod and and VHT Pittbull Classic (EL34). Scott also liked a Fryette Deliverance profile a lot and that might have been used here. Leads were a combo of the Splawn and a JCM 800. Cleans were a Fender Deluxe and AC30.

Guitars used: '08 LP Traditional, G&L Legacy, Gretsch Country Gentleman, '90s Ibanez 550, and I think Scott used his JEM for his leads.

We recorded and mixed the whole album in Reaper.
