First NGD in six years!

Frito's Better Half
Traded some Oakley sunglasses at a pawn shop for this Frakenstrat. Haven't been able to figure it all out, but whoever put it together put some thought and money in it.

Re: First NGD in six years!

Alright, so this is what I can gather.

Body and neck appear to be a Squier. Decent enough quality. Nut is graphite. Tuners are Washburn branded Gotoh lockers, and the trem is not stock. Roller string retainer like you find on MIA Standards. Neck pickup appears to be a Samarium Cobalt Noiseless, middle looks like a standard ceramic cheapy with an American pickup cover over it, since the pickup holes don't line up, and the bridge looks like a DiMarzio rails something or another. When I go to change the strings, I'll take it apart and find out what's going on under the pickguard and pull the neck off to look for branding or indications of it's origin.

Either way, I got the better end of that stick since they had no idea what they were sitting on (not that they could move it anyway), and I'm back in to playing. Now, I just have to get an amp of some sort.

Re: First NGD in six years!

When I got back into playing ten years ago, after being out of it for thirteen, I got a Roland Microcube. Headphone friendly, good enough for the bedroom with the stock speaker, run it through a P.A. if you want to play with others. They're still selling for around $150. Oh and it can run off 6 AA batteries.

Re: First NGD in six years!

It did what I needed it to do for small money. Not saying it's the do all end all, just that it's a good place to start to get something decent sounding to play through. Get back more into it, get better stuff.

Re: First NGD in six years!

I've been looking at getting one, but I'm really going for the IK iRig UA.

Totally agree!

Best Craigslist deal I ever had was when I traded an Ibanez Prestige that I paid $525 for a 2001 Fender US Deluxe Strat with a tweed case too.

To the OP, the guitar looks very clean, how are the frets? I can't really tell but it doesn't look like they have much to any wear. Congrats again man and welcome back to guitar ownership! :headbang:

Re: First NGD in six years!

Thanks guys! The guitar is in great shape, with little to no fret wear. I'll be picking up an amp and stuff like that this weekend and getting back to it to play my oldest's Christmas pagent.

Re: First NGD in six years!

I'm about at that point as well.

My latest buy was an Epiphone Les Paul standard back in late 09 iirc.

Funny thing is what I want now is another paul.

Sweet strat though, looks perfect.

Re: First NGD in six years!

If it's a Squier "Standard" or "SE" body, they're pretty much the best non-F-branded bodies you can get for the $ out there. Full depth, solid wood, exact right shape, cheap $. Both the parts casters I have are made with Squier bodies, after trying GFS/Rock Audio (probably the same Chinese factory) and other "cheap" bodies. And it looks like whoever made this, just made it to play good, not to impress anybody with brand names. I think it's a good guitar, especially if you traded sun glasses for it! Happy NGD!

Re: First NGD in six years!

Just opened the hood during a string change and found out some interesting things. The bridge block is machined brass, with the trem spring cavity and pickup routing is all shielded (although not that great of a job), and the wiring was all upgraded. CTS pots, Switchcraft switch and jack... The wiring needs some cleaning up, and I'll get to that eventually. The neck pickup has a nice warm tone, the middle sucks (cheap ceramic), and the bridge pickup is a Dimarzio, but I can't deduce which one without a multimeter.

But, the whole thing is great. I'm incredibly happy to be back with a solid body electric, no matter what it is.

Re: First NGD in six years!

First, welcome back! After I got married, I had to hock my gear and went 11yrs without and started back with a cheap Squier and had to do the upgrades myself. But I was so thrilled to be back in the saddle!! Looks like you got a great deal ! Espec with the upgrades! The keys look like the ones that came on the Grover Jackson era US made Washburns. Great stuff there!
