First "real" overdrive petal

I have been modeling on my Gdec for some time, but now I'm looking at getting a few real petals to use now and when I replace my modeling amp for a better amp. I so far just use a generic Overdrive on most of my modeling presets and get my tone variations from the amp settings, so I'm looking hard at what style of overdrive to get.

Should I go with a Tube Screamer or a Boss SD-1 or what?

I just want something reasonably priced, easy to use, and overall simple to put in front of my amp(s).

I'm planning to hit up a guitar center to test as many out as possible, but maybe yall can narrow what I should try out first/hardest.

In my opinion, if you have a budget to spend on pedals, it might be better put towards a more professional amplifier.

There are plenty of extremely good overdrive and distortion pedals available but your current amplifier is unlikely to do the pedals justice.

NOTE - I am not knocking the Fender G-DEC. (It is, undeniably, a fun product.) I am suggesting that the dynamic reactions demonstrated in the video above are unlikely to be properly reproduced by a digital pre-amplifier, driving a small loudspeaker, in a particleboard cabinet.

The Amp is going to become my toy amp for trying out setups I won't use often and for when I have friends over.

I'm window shopping for a decent somewhat Marshally voiced tube <20w combo that I can disconnect the stock speaker so I can run a larger cabinet or a Bass cab if needed. Jet City is what seems to catch my eye right now for that

I'm just wondering what kind of overdrive petals are for what? I see the Tube Screamer is a popular yet hated choice. Much like a JB [emoji14]

The Ibanez/Maxon Tube Screamer is a popular choice with player of vintage-style Stratocasters who wish to push a valve amplifier beyond "crunch" into outright "filth". It also contributes a bunch of odd order harmonics to the recipe.

Honestly, I'd wait until you get the amp, then run through the litany of OD choices to see what your guitar/amp combo responds to. It may be a traditional Tube Screamer, it may be a modified Tube Screamer a la Fulldrive, it may be a flatter OD like a Blues Driver or OCD, and it may be a transparent OD like a Klone, Timmy or Euphoria. It comes down to the midrange of the guitar, amp and OD in question. I kind of innately understood this, but the below video really hit the point home for me.

no pedals are going to sound good thru your gdec.
Sort yourself out a non-digital amp first and then start looking for ways to boost it.
