First Things First

Every time I get a new effects processor/modeler, I find myself first editing the noise gate. I use it at a minimum level, just to reduce feedback or amp noise.

Who really uses the noise gate at the default levels? Does anyone? I find it real hard to pick and sustain notes, so I prefer to keep the strings quiet with my hands.

Am I going about this the right way?

Re: First Things First

Often times, I just turn it off completely unless the patch/setting requires it. For the record, I use a GT-6.

Re: First Things First

only MultiFX unit i have found that has a nice noise gate is the Line 6 PODS.. some of the others just seem to limit everything too much

Re: First Things First

The Line6 gate is amazing...Everything else is PITA.But if you're on a gig and the amp is hissing, there is no other chance!

Re: First Things First

After owning the Rocktron Utopia and PODXT Live, I can safely say that Rocktron beats the crap out of them all when it comes to tone. I only traded up because the Utopia is missing a few features like USB. Another thing is the chromatic tuner. I hate having to carry another tuner around, so for me, it's invaluable to have it built-in to the pedal.

When Rocktron finally gets around to updating the Utopia, or if I ever get around to saving up for a mixing/recording device, I'm going to sell the PODXTL and get it again.

I did finally get a few distortions that I feel comfortable playing with, but I miss the hell out of my Utopia.

Re: First Things First

I put them together for different guitars and different tones within them.

Since I have the luxury of being able to pick it makes sense to put patches together for them to match.

Re: First Things First

I always tweak equip when I get it. I've got the Tonelab and have tweaked the gate on it, but I don't usually have problems with noise. Sustain isn't a problem.
