First tube amp..

I´m looking for my first tube amp, 15-30w with good cleans and only one channel to use with a DS-1 but the problem is that i don´t have much choices.
So...
If you have to choose between a U$700 brand new blues junior and a vintage 1974 Princeton Reverb for u$850 what would you pick and why'
Thanks for your help

Re: First tube amp..

I had a Blues Jr. and bought a '76 Princeton Reverb. There is no comparison IMHO. I sold the BJ in a hurry.

The guy that had my PR previously put a 12" speaker in it, gives it a bit more bottom end. My friend has a '72 PR with a 10" speaker. The 10" speakers sound great in these amps.

The PR is a great amp that should retain it's value. Have an amp tech look at the Princeton before you get it. It might need new caps and tubes, etc.

The old Fender stuff has great tone, is very well built and easy to maintain.

You won't regret getting a PR !!

Good Luck.

Let us know what you end up getting.

Dave

Re: First tube amp..

Princeton big time. Those amps are sweeeeeeet! $850 ain't a bad price either....

Re: First tube amp..

Tube amps are pretty loud already, how about the epi valve head for just $100 and getting a cab for it. Check out the clips some just put out on the head. The cleans sounded pretty nice.

Re: First tube amp..

The problem is that in my country a Marshall Valvestate is around U$1600 the head. So a Princeton for that money is a hell of a deal.
The thread question should have been "is the PR a classic or a piece of s**t?
I mean if it is a good fender amp like a Deluxe Reverb or a bad fender tube amp

Re: First tube amp..

Now that your looking for your first real amp, maybe you should get a real guitar stratman.

Re: First tube amp..

Princeton reverb all the way !! Your getting Classic Fender Tone, a P2P wired circuit, true tube driven reverb, tube rectifier. And if you take care of it? the amp will appreciate in value. You won't have to worry about PCB mounted component failure(i.e. Input jacks) My PR was my main gigging amp amp for the last 10 years.:D

Re: First tube amp..

Oh dont get me wrong, alot of my fav. players used strats - i.e. Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Yngwie Malmsteen.
However, its just not my first weapon of choice. I dig it tho, and some of my mates use it as a main axe, but I give them a bit for it, all in good fun.

sorry for hijaking.
