Fishman's new pickups

Re: Fishman's new pickups

This sounds like a really cool idea, and it has some real potential. I think that 'modelling pickup' is a bit of an unfortunate misnomer, as it is literally picking up the magnetic signal the same way a regular pickup would. The word modelling though.. I bet you money that no matter how amazing they sound, there will be a thread on TGP, or a bunch of youtube comments talking about how they sound like 'digital trash'.

I remember reading about one of the high end high gain amp companies (I think it was Bogner? Could be wrong) which used a chipset to tune the amplifier frequencies, and at the time there were threads online saying 'Why would I pay 3k for a digital POS?' and a lot of clips I saw had a handful of people pointing out they could 'hear' the digital tone.

I guess, you taste the wine with a mixture of your eyes and your pocketbook.

There was a thread on these over at HC as well, with this pic of the PCB coils:

Anyone else besides me think these would look cool uncovered, on a more modern-styled axe like a Steinberger Spirit? Or is this just my day job as tech geek showing through?

Re: Fishman's new pickups

They don't sound very good in that demo. Some serious EQing would be necessary to get those to sound right.

Re: Fishman's new pickups

I got a R&D challenge for SD. 3D printed pickups! :scratchch

Print 'em, load them with magnets and install!

I'm joking of course.

It is hard to get a true idea of the sound through 2 1/5 inch computer speakers. I am going to wait until I play them before passing judgement.

Re: Fishman's new pickups

But the burning question we all want to know.......

Will they have an A8 magnet and cure cancer.....and if not can we magnet swap them?

While I'm not involved in the project and have no affiliation, it seems like a good joke to the pickup culture.

I've been recruiting PhD engineers for projects like this in silicon valley for a LONG time and have become more technically minded than when I started out.

I'd hazard the guess that the preamp on these is dependent on how they've set the magnets. It sounds like they do some kind of hyper charge and then reduce the held charge to desired levels to play well with the pre-amp, which is supposed to be analog. Yes. Psyched.
