FIVE WATTS, GARAGE, 11AM WEEKDAY: just got a knocking neighbour "TURN IT DOWN!!" o_O

...now is this crazy, or is this crazy?! Bloody suburbia.

To add insult to injury: amp was set to 12 NOON across the board - GAIN, MASTER, and EQ's all. Well, oooookay, I do concede that I was running a TS9 and DS1, also all set to noon, into it, BUT... STILL... SERIOUSLY!?!?

5 watts is louder than it seems it might be.

Play in the basement next time. Garage doors leak sound big time.

So do the walls and foundations!

Next time your neighbour uses a motor mower, ask them to turn their noise down.

California, no basements here.

Also, I miiiight just have "forgotten" to mention that I was running it into a 4x12". Lol. It's just that, with people regularly discussing stuff like the merits of splurging on a triple rec over a single rec - for a BEDROOM amp for nights & weekends only - all over various online communities... Well... Y'know, kinda funny, this.

Just yesterday, was looking up solutions to a hum problem and schematics for a *65-watter*, and the general internet consensus seemed to be that it's just too inherently weak to be worth fixing. And people kept saying that SOOO much in all responses to anybody asking questions about how to fix the bloody hum (or specifically, which # capacitors to examine most closely for routinely failing solder joints), instead of answering the question or moving along already, that I must've read how 65 watts was puny a good 200 times yesterday... So when that today happened it was like - seriously???

On a side note, if I beat the hum, I'm so giving that Marshall Valvestate a speaker out jack mod. Now I'm just honestly curious if a 65-watt hybrid can be much QUIETER than a 5-watt tube, and if not, how far I can turn it up going into a 4x12 before my ears start to bleed. Or the neighbours return.

....OR, if they're similar enough in output, the two of em might just make up a decent stereo rig, each going into half of the Marshall 1960A stereo 4x12. Think it'll have any merit, at least as a curio? Desirable sounds range from hardrock to metal, more in a hair metal maybe power metal sense, less so in a EMG 81 in Triple Rec somethin or other-core sense...

When I was a teenager, I'd play in the garage and sometimes my friends would knock on the door and say LAPD, open up!

One time it happened and I responded "F off," and that time it really was a cop. He stuck his billy club right through the garage door. When I opened the door, he stabbed me in the chest with his index finger and said "when I tell you to open the door, you open the door!"

My neighbors have learned to deal with it. When I play my 100 waters in my basement rec room, the palm mutes vibrate through the ground and into my neighbors houses.
I have a detached garage and when my wife comes home, she said when she places her hand on the steel garage doorknob, she can feel the vibrations from my amp being played inside my house.
I usually only play in 30min-1hr intervals and cops around here can take all day or night to find time to show up. By then, the amp has long cooled down and been shut off.

Heck, I don't mind if ppl complain when I get a bit too into it or accidentally plug into the passive input when running a massive active Seymour Duncan'd bass through my 1x15 + 4x12 Carvin/Marshall bass "stack" - turned up to all of 30% volume, that thing can insta-liquefy bubblegum and blow the tartar right off yer teeth - but that's a monstrous amount a wattage, and from a manufacturer that really knew how to make every last watt count back in the day (well at least in that amp they did).

...this, however, is AN EPIPHONE AMP. With what I think might be half-dead tubes, cuz only one in that (2) 12AX7 / (1) EL84 circuit even glows much cranked these days (haven't opened her up to see which is which). And this is a complaint coming from another house, and NOT even the people on the lots to either side... C'mon, what's with that?

During the day there will be a db level (which will be relatively loud) that you can happily play to. A 5W amp shouldn't be louder than this at half.

Most town's sound ordinance laws don't kick in til sundown. I'd have told him to eat it and turned up louder. Then I would have played the Iron Man riff for 2 hour straight. I do something similar w/ my Triple Rect every time my dbag neighbor wants to play with his little RC car.

The kid down the block has a whole band jam in his basement on Sunday afternoons and no one could care less. My next door neighbor complains he can't hear the guitar and tell me to "rock out" louder. If someone DARED to tell me what I could do in my house I would tell them to F off and never step foot on my property again.

my epiphone valve junior combo IS WAY TOO LOUD AT LESS THAN 1 ON VOLUME FOR ANY APARTMENT I HAVE LIVED IN!!!

neighbors freak at that.

Re: FIVE WATTS, GARAGE, 11AM WEEKDAY: just got a knocking neighbour "TURN IT DOWN!!"

wattage does not equal volume. You can get 100decibels at 1 meter from a 1 watt amp.

Re: FIVE WATTS, GARAGE, 11AM WEEKDAY: just got a knocking neighbour "TURN IT DOWN!!"

Wow that's lame. I'm pretty lucky my neighbors would never call the fuzz on me. I rehearse with my band in our basement once a week till about 9:30 and I know it can be heard outside, but it isn't very loud. With windows down I wouldn't think it would bother people. I mean, people now their lawns & stuff and that's pretty loud. How close together are the houses?

COPS #@#$%$#@

That was assault on and destruction of private property, which he entered without having a proper warrant!
You could have brought the butt wiping cop up charges!

There is another thought…. Maybe your playing isn’t all you think that it is!

I know that when I am back home in USA, and when I play, the neighbors usually bring the beer and lawn chairs…
It generally turns into a party / BBQ and no one ever complains.
Of course, several neighbors are musicians so that helps.

Amps are loud. Even those little SS practice amps have enough volume to project murmurs through walls and the immediate neighbourhood.

maybe he was complaining about your playing and not because it was loud.

Exactly. 11am feels very much like peak daytime even to me.

Regarding what I was or wasn't playing - I didn't even really get to the playing... I was fiddling around trying to figure out settings adjustments to dial in that'd roughly correspond to each other in output and approximate flavour of tone for two different guitars, and only got as far as getting a "benchmark" feel off the one guitar with everything set to noon... hit standby to unplug it, went for the other guitar, and hear loud knocking and "Turn it down will ya?"

...responded with an "uh, kinda off already, didntcha notice?!" cuz I wasn't in the mood for conflicts quite THAT early on.
