Hey everybody! I was thinking about taking my gibson es135 with p90s in to the local shop to get it checked out and fixed up. It is from 1992 and I got it about a year ago but lately I feel it hasn't been sounding as good as usual and sometime I have to jiggle the selector switch around to get things going. Also I feel like the pots need to be fixed up cause they have been cutting in and out and making noise if I tap them. So I don't know much about this guitar and usually fixed up my own strats and teles so I've never had much experience with taking guitars to shops for fixes and setups. So my question is should I take and in and how much would it cost me. Thank you!

If you've never worked on a hollowbody before, then consider the fact that it is pretty much the most annoying thing ever to fish out the electronics, fix em up and put em back. I would rather not eat for several days than work on a hollowbody. But if you're up for the challenge, go for it.

If not for it being a hollow body I would say go to RadioShack and get a can of Cleaner and Lubricant (they used to call it TV Tuner Cleaner) and spray out the pots and selector switch. As it is I would take it to the shop in your case. Though I've learned some tricks to get the controls back in place, CTN is right, it's not a lot of fun. In fact it ranks as a first class PITA.

Its been many years since 1992, most pots and switches, both being based on contacting material, would fail sooner or later. I trust the friends here about the difficulty, and if doing semi-stock electronics work for strat is a PITA i can only imagine with the es135. They shouldn't charge more than 50-60 USD, IMHO.

I assume you're referring to labor only. I charge 55-75 for f-hole guitars, plus parts.
