How common is it? I think they definitely charged the pretty wood premium on this one, but how many more with necks like that (not maple) are out there

Its pretty rare.
Maybe its the even-ness of the growing season, but IME warmer climate woods seem to have more regular grain development. Those with a more extreme seasonal variance seem to be more prone to developing figure.

I see some figuring in mahogany every now and then but that might be the most I’ve seen. Had a guitar with a subtle flamed Korina top in a chevron pattern at one time.

Also, I see you’re in Champaign. I lived in Champaign for several years. Grew up just south of there. Small word.
