If I may be brutally honest, don't try to cover up what you consider to be sub-par playing with effects. At best, it will be an entertaining novelty for a few minutes. After that, it will sound like crap playing with a flanger going "wooooaaaaaaahhhhhhoooowwwww" over top of it.
A good analogy for this is newer movies where the CGI is amazing, but the acting and writing suck.
But to answer your question, a flanger isn't going to make your guitar totally unrecognizable. A ring modulator might fool non-guitarists, though.
if you're not already listening to frank zappa........you oughta be.
i think he would speak to you.

You said that you think your playing is sub-par, and that you want people to not know that your guitar is a guitar. I guess my reply was way off base.thats not really what i meant either. ugh
everyone plays guitar. EVERYONE. and their dogs too. what i'm trying to say is that no matter how good i am, i will be a guitarist. playin the same old stuff that everyone else plays. thats what i dont' want. i want people to realize that i'm a musician, not a guitarist.
i don't really know how to explain it. i loathe being a guitarist, but i like doing it. its like being the executive of an oil company. if i were one, i wouldn't like ripping people off but i like the money.
basically, i hate being a guitar play but i enjoy playing. just b/c everyone can play guitar and the stuff that i play is not appreciated these days as good music therefore no one around me thinks i'm good. ugh......screw it.
lol, i can't. i'm in a band and its all i do for like 2 or 3 hours a dayYou said that you think your playing is sub-par, and that you want people to not know that your guitar is a guitar. I guess my reply was way off base.
Seriosuly though, you really need to quit for awhile.
