I have had both of the MXR Flangers. Loved my micro years back and bought the big boy M-117 as a replacement. My only issue with the MXRs is the volume drop when engaged drove me crazy. A slight boost would have been fine but a drop was counter productive. When I researched the web it was not just me a lot of people had issue with this problem. Now that I have the MOOG I can set the pedal for a natural volume when engaged or to even have a boost. Admittedly it might me a bit more than most people are looking for.

The Moog is amazing ... it's laid out like a modular synth module and is super versatile.

That comes as no surprise.
I have not owned a dedicated flanger pedal for years. I have the effect in rack devices and as a DAW plug-in. For modulation, I am mostly using chorus or Uni-Vibe.

As with Chorus - there are a few classic tones, a few one trick ponies, and some swiss army Flangers, and few other things. To me - Modulation is less about "that" tone than the tone I want.
Electric Mistriss is a classic
Boss BF-2 is a flexible meat and potatoes sound
Choral Flange is a neat thing
Obviously the ADA is a distinctive voice

I have one of those sitting here that I'm thinking about selling, just picked up a cheap/used MXR Micro that fits into my board better and the MXR flange is pretty much the only sound I use, when I do. The Digitech pedal is really nice, I wondered why they never made a Hardwire version of that, lots of cool sounds with the voicing options!

I've used and own a LOT of flangers. My experience with the effect is that if you don't put kn time and find what's right for your sound and your style - you'll be disappointed.
I play a lot of "thick" sounding rock/metal. Lots of stoner rock (think Fu Manchu and Kyuss) straight up to Doomy stuff. Because I need my low frequency response to stay where I put it, I mainly use the HF-2.
The HF-2 is NOT loved by most because it is subtle and as PF said, it only really effects your high end. Therefore is is naturally "airy" sounding to me. I got mine on Ebay like 6 years ago for $40.
Another great flanger that doesn't get enough love is the TC Electronic Vortex. It has toneprint so you can use artist presets or fire up your PC and edit your own sound exactly how you want it.
The Vortex has a Tape mode and a "regular" mode. Both are useful. I have a toneprint loaded on it to emulate the Hartman flanger.

I (being excited about flangers), posted about the TC before I saw this. Whoops.
I used to have an EM that stopped working and since it wasn't vintage/I was a dumb kid - I junked it.
The Hartman/EM toneprint that I downloaded was actually pretty damn close. I used it as a starting point to edit my own and I'm quite happy with it.
