Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

Still, you haven't answered my question - can you take a Gibson P90 or Duncan SP90-1, cut the ends down, and put a PC cover on it?

If it's 8.5k or less and not loosely wound, probably with the coil already in place, though I wouldn't recommend it because sawing the ends off would be a delicate thing to do with the coil already there. One slip and it's rewind time.

It would be better to cut the ends off the bobbin before you wind the coil.

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

I posted the pic to show that the bobbin was in fact a traditional P-90 with the ends shaved down and not taller as stated by the Admiral...

I believe my words were... "You can plainly see that the Cat is just a P-90 with the bobbin edges shaved down and mounted on a humbucker baseplate"

Isn't it obvoius from the frayed copper windings and dangling lead wires that it was not a stock pickup and in fact the Phat Cat I ruined removing windings as discussed in previous threads...

Thanks dude! Oi Vey!:smack: Very interesting stuff. It's all good.

Has anyone tried an A5 in the Phat Cat? How does it sound? If it has more usable P-90 snarly-goodness, will the Custom Shop make me one? Will the Custom Shop call it the Phat Five?

First, it was the Brobucker...and now the Phat Five!
er, "Phat Phive"...ummm the "Phat 5ive"!?
:)

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

I'm hoping to buy/trade for a Phat Cat next week.

This thread really wasn't helping my enthusiasm.....lol

However, the "Phat 5ive" sounds like cool idea...I'm just not 100% sure ( due to my confusion in trying to comprehend the multifaceted nature of this thread...sorry guys, I haven't heard that many P-90 pups to compare) how it would sound in comparison to a "normal" SD Phat Cat.

Can someone please expand on/clarify this in simple terms.

Thanks

Dave

Putting A5's in a Phat Cat would give it more output, more bite, more bass and more grind in the upper mids. Might hollow out the mid-mids and low-mids a bit.

The above assumes the A5's are more or less fully charged.

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

This thread reminded me of the religion threads we had a while ago :laugh2:

An A5 phat cat sounds like a cool concept, I'd like to stick one in the neck of my lp.

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

Let's start a Phat Five bridge pickup movement! Heck, the Brobucker started the same way! I'm not even demanding SD create a pickup with a 10k number. I am no vintage afficianado (and God Bless ALL those who are)...I just tend to like wilder offerings. The P-90 tone is such a natural beast, it needs to be unleashed.

In this played-out world of guitar tone, isn't a wild P-90 tone the next "big thing"?

The EMG thing is played out. The Strat, The Tele, The Les Paul PAF tone is a deeply grooved wagon wheel road. zzzzzzzz.

Give me (us?) a reason to buy a shag-nasty pickup that can fly down a dirt road, and kick up rocks, dirt, and gravel upon those who have the guts to follow.

We all know that there is a burgeoning wave of inexpensive semi-hollow Asian import guitars being sold these days. There are some nice pieces for the money beind sold (by the thousands) every day. Not everbody wants to reminisce about tones they have never heard. They have neither the music collection, or the gear to recreate the music exactly. Give them a fist of fury for today's amps and gear.

Is there something about the construction of the Phat Cat that prevents a typical magnet swap? Seems odd that no one here has done that yet.

P-90 SHOULD be a religion; The tone can be God-like!

Nothing other than the relative difficulty of removing the cover and repotting after reinstall.

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

You don't necessarily need to re-pot it. Just don't remove the "wax brick" from around the bobbin.

But beyond that, there's no reason you can't swap magnets on it. Just remember it has TWO magnets, not just one...

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

How might it sound with one A2 mag and one A5? Are they the same size magnets that are in humbuckers? because I have an A5 lying around and I need a new neck pickup in my SG...

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

It would depend on which side the A5 was on relative to neck and bridge and whether it was a neck or bridge position pu.

I'd recommend A5 on the side facing the neck for both -- but the beauty is you can spin the pickup around 180 degrees and try it both ways without having to pull the magnets out.

Evan said they tried that and it sounded like ALPO...

Great point! Are they the same size? Also, Who wants to sell me a set of quality A5 magnets (or a direct me to trusted supplier) that will fit the Phat cat?

Re: Flat out: Does the Phat Cat sound Like a Gibson P-90?

PC's use the same size magnets as humbuckers.

I tried putting an A3 on the bridge side of a neck PC I have and it still sounded good but the A2 was better.
