Flossing your nuts.

Sorry, couldn't help myself with the title. I'm easily amused.

Wondering if anyone has used abrasive cord for minor tweaks like smoothing rough string-thru ferrules or nut slots. I just dealt with a rough ferrule that was breaking a string and I got by with some fine grit paper. Never tried the abrasive cord though. Looks like it would be handy for lots of things.

Re: Flossing your nuts.

Google Mitchell Abrasives or search "abrasive cord" at the stew mac site. Lots of places sell it. Stew Mac sells it in small rolls and they have a short video that I've watched. Just hoping for hands-on opinions from some SD members.

Re: Flossing your nuts.

Bob Hartman from Petra advises guitarists to not neglect flossing between string changes. I do it on my guitars and it does get some sting residue/gunk out.

Heard that before but I thought that was more about leaving some wax from the dental floss in the slots. Definitely should get the gunk too though. I've never tried it.

I thought Bob mentioned it was a dual purpose–clean anything out of the nut (dust/dirt/string residue) as well as leave wax residue to help the string glide and not get caught up/bind up in the nut.

I'm sure he probably did. I don't remember where I read it and never thought about the cleaning part until you mentioned it.

You do realize that the thread wasn't actually about cleaning/waxing nut slots with dental floss, right? I just thought it was a funny thread title. I wasn't even thinking about the dental floss "trick" when I posted it. I was actually asking about abrasive cord.

I got some from StewMac and I used it to de-burr the notches I cut in some new bridge saddles I installed in a Nashville bridge. It seemed to work ok, although it disintegrated pretty fast.

Re: Flossing your nuts.

How about tooth paste and a that free toothbrush your dental hygienist gives you? Mask off the area, of course.

Re: Flossing your nuts.

My wife leaves these things all over the place. It sounds like a good way to polish the inside of the slot. Not to mention the pick side would be good for running along the sides of frets to remove gunk.

Not quite mouth wash, but I'd recommend getting some naptha in there to thin the grime and allow it to dislodge easier.

Saw that on the video. At least it worked. I'll have to get some to keep on hand to try for myself I guess. Thanks.

Next time, I'll just go with a normal title instead of a creative one. This thread went to hell before it started. Shame on me. :1:

On the contrary, this thread was pretty informative and I probably would have skipped right over it if it wasn't for the title :D

I have one bridge that seems to go through strings quickly, and they always seem to break right at the saddle. I'm fairly certain there's a burr in there somewhere, but I couldn't figure out where. I'm going to try both the floss and the cord next string change.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Re: Flossing your nuts.

Not sure, but I would mask it off regardless

Good idea lol

All of my guitars that I use now have nitro finishes on both the guitar and neck...I sand the back of the necks down but don't want to cut through the finish on any other part of the guitar

Re: Flossing your nuts.

What about using some 2000 grit sand paper.....Its extremely fine and works well on my knife when I sharpen it.....It should do good at removing a burr as well, not to mention polishing the nut up....Nice thread name BTW.....Very informative also....
