Floyd Mounting, Wood scew studs or insert studs?

Re: Floyd Mounting, Wood scew studs or insert studs?

I'd think studs are more stable, but I also HATE studs because if you need to take them out, it is a PITA.

Doesn't have to be.
Just remove the post. Drop a smaller screw or something that will fit into the opening.
Screw the post back in. As it presses against the object, which presses against the wood, the stud backs out of the hole.
Easy peasy.

I tried that once. And I made sure the head was flat against the bottom of the wood, and screwing the post in lodged the screw in the wood. And it wasn't a soft wood at all, it was oak.

^^ Or (less elegant solution) use a claw hammer to lever out the insert using the stud with appropriate cushioning so you don't damage the guitar or anything else.

For Floyds, studs/inserts all the way. Many of the two post trems made by Gotoh have solid bottom inserts and studs that can be locked down via a small grub screw to eliminate play between the stud and the insert. This play contributes towards loose inserts in some guitars over time. Locking studs are also used by Ibanez on the original Edge/Lo-Pro and the newer Edge Zero trems.

Wear and tear is normal in such a high stress area; some guitars hold up better than others. My Ibanez is 26 years old and shows no issues (non locking studs on this one); while the guitar that preceded it started exhibiting ovaling on the bass insert after 5 years. Studs/inserts are going to be better by default than wood screws for a Floyd at any rate.

You had a Floyd Rose in a oak-body guitar?
Hunh.
Ok, I'll have to amend that to, "easy peasy, if you use typical guitar woods". :)

I've heard of people doing things like gluing the sh*t out of their nut when just a little drop to hold it in place will do.
I'm wondering if maybe those were glued in.
Weird.
