Floyd Rose drop D spring alignment?

Hey - There is one question I can't ever seem to find an answer for on tuning a floyd. I thought maybe someone here would have some input. Wouldn't you think when you drop the tuning on just one string (such as drop D) you should move the springs to a different position so they pull evenly to the lesser tension on the string? Instead of being, say (||||) you should change them to (|||\) or something similar? This makes sense to me but maybe I'm over thinking it a bit.

Re: Floyd Rose drop D spring alignment?

IMO no, because the slight tension difference in one string is not enough to warrant a sideways rebalancing. Many players even swap between standard and dropped d on the fly using the fine tuner (including me when I only have one axe with me).

On the other hand, some players like for ex. Laiho use asymetric arrangements because they prefer the way it changes the overall feel.

I personally use 4-5 springs depending on guitar, so I don´t have much leeway for moving springs around anyway, but in my experience it´s a fun thing to tinker with for a bit but most come back to the symetrical setups in the end.

That all being said, you can try it and see how you like it, but the increase in spring tension between |||| and |||/ will pull the whole trem closer to the body (if it´s not blocked) and would actually require resetting teh claw to get the overall tension right again. If anything you´d want to lower tension on the side with the detuned string ;)

Ah, very true. I did a little bit of backwards thinking there :smack: Thanks tho, I'm about to retune and try it out now.

Correct, because the "art" of setting up a Floyd is a balancing act between string & spring tension, so if one gets lessened, the other must as well.

(I say "art" because so many people think it's nearly impossible to set up a Floyd, when the truth of the matter is that it's not very difficult)
