can I put an original(german) floyd rose in a Jackson licensed FR cavity?
what drill bit do I need to make the stud holes larger?
the nut slot is 11/16,so do I need an R3 or R4 nut?
Thanks!

Re: floyd rose in a Jackson licensed cavity?

An OFR should fit fine in a JT580 route. I've seen this mod many times. The stud hole diameter is 10mm, I believe. I am pretty sure you can find technical drawings for OFR, Schaller and Gotoh floyds by means of a search engine.

Let me just warn you against drilling anchor holes by hand, it's a drill press job. Good luck.

can I do it with a file?
what about the nut(r3 or r4)?

Re: floyd rose in a Jackson licensed cavity?

It fits, you might have to clearance a tiny bit on the arm side and maybe out of the front, just enough that it doesn't rub is sufficient. You can use the original posts if you want, they work fine. I'm in the process of reworking my OFR/Kelly job a bit, and I'm planning to use the OFR posts this time. They are slightly larger in diameter and a bit shorter than the stock anchors. I'm dowelling and re-drilling. I wouldn't try freehand drilling or sanding, that also wouldn't fix the gap underneath the shallower anchor problem either.

Also, R3 is the right width, but it's taller by a decent amount. I'd keep the BH43 Jackson nut if you've got it.

What he said. ^

I can't imagine how a file would do. It's just two holes, but they had better be in the correct place, shape, depth, and at the right angle. I'd look around a bit and see if I can find a woodworking or machine shop nearby, equipped with the right tool and ask if I could use it for the task. It's a 10 minute job at most, but can end up in an ugly accident if you're careless. I'd much rather just use existing anchors with Ping studs, than risk damaging a decent body.

As far as I know, R3 and R4, are both 42.8 mm wide, but differ in string spacing. The narrow spaced R3 is recommended for bound necks, the wider spaced R4 for necks without binding. An R3 would work just fine as well, if you wanted a little extra margin around the outer strings.

Re: floyd rose in a Jackson licensed cavity?

I know gotoh's don't always fit into an ofr route. My carvin dc 127c has an ofr and i tried to install a gotoh and it wont fit unless you remove some timber around the back of the unit so it can sit into the recess.

But yeah you should have no worries as the ofr is smaller.

Re: floyd rose in a Jackson licensed cavity?

The string lock bolts are the problem on the Gotoh, they're way longer. No problem on the OFR. The OFR has a different offset arm side vs the other, so there is a bigger gap on the non-arm side, could be a problem for someone hung up on looks. I'm just painting the trem cavity black on mine so it won't be seen as much.

If you get an R3 or R4 just know you'll have to shave it down quite a bit. Like I said, just get the BH43 nut off ebay or something if you don't have one, save yourself a lot of annoyance.

I know gotoh's don't always fit into an ofr route.

Sometimes just swapping the Gotoh bolts for shorter ones gets the job done.

Another reason to appreciate the top mounting style. Having a Floyd stuck deep in a body cavity doesn't sound remotely promising :laugh2:

Bro it wasn't the bolts its the bassplate on the gotoh its larger at the back. This was the case on my carvin anyway my ibanez sabre had no problems.

And sorry for derailing the thread but i wanna show this. The yellow circle indicates the problem area and the yellow line is a rough representation of the timber that would need to be remove in order to fit the gotoh.

yeah what's up with that? i basically only swapped the bridge, everything else was a bit off, the holes on the claw, the retainer jammy, posts. The location of the posts were right on tho. The springs for licensed were kinda stiffer than those of OFR. feels smoother now. Also, the fine tuners on the licensed are kinda "vague" like weird variance kinda thing happening.
