Floyd Rose question

Hi,

I was looking at a post here about FR Trems Floyd Rose: "Original or Licensed"

Many FR and other FR-licensed trems were discussed, but not those found on Jacksons.

Most of my guitars have the jackson JT580LP which I believe are Schaller FR licensed copies.

These fit Dinkys and Soloists - well, that's mostly where I have/use them.
I also have an OFR that came installed on a higher end USA made soloist, as well as a brand new (Chinese made) Charvel!

So, are these jackson trems good/bad/worse than for example, the FR 'special' made in Korea, or the FR II?
These jackson/Schaller trems seem to work fine and sound fine, rarely go out of tune.

After playing an OFR on the 2 guitars I have that have them on, I am looking for an upgrade path for these non-OFR guitars and can't realistically spend full pop for a full-fledged OFR, for so many guitars. Any recommendations?
Do I need to be concerned with the low-profile designation-does that mean overall string height is lower than OFR?

Also, where/how are the jackson trems are expected to wear/fail: knife edges? baseplate adjustment threads?
A lot of my guitars are from the early/mid 90's, but it's not like I play all of them everyday.
However, previous owners may have...

I'm wanting to upgrade for benefits in tone, adjustability, playability, and longevity...

thanks guys.

thanks!

Re: Floyd Rose question

i love my my jt580 lp..ALWAYS stays in tune and I literally never break a string.. IMO its a waste of money to replace one with a OFR but some just like to drop a few hundred on something that really wont make much of a difference.. so they can say "look my guitar has an OFR".....besides I love the lo-pro feels and too get a floyd lo-pro is crazy expensive.. like 150 more than a OFR..

I have two of those tremolos on my charvels and they are great. Easily equal to any new version. Save your money and practice instead,

Re: Floyd Rose question

I like the sound of the OFR better than the JT580LP. It's snappier and more responsive. The change-out was worth it on the guitar I play the most. I think the JT580LP has a warmth and softness that's nice sometimes, but I didn't really want that for this guitar. I wanted more bite and sting.

Re: Floyd Rose question

The JT580LP was manufactured in Japan by Takeuchi as far as I know. Compared to an OFR or the newer Schaller Lockmeisters the sound is warmer and softer. Pretty solid and stable unit though. Lasted me 10 years before the tuning stability began to suffer.

Re: Floyd Rose question

I think the new models Jackson have came out with that are more affordable are much better than they used to be. I have a Jackson KVX10 King V which was part of the old X series that I bought in 2009, and the guitar plays like a bat out of hell and sounds phenomenal, but the Floyd that came with it is absolute junk. Completely unusable. I always preferred the OFR. When I played one of the new X series guitars with the FR Trem, I whammied the snot out of the thing, and it stayed perfectly in tune, They must've really worked on the trems they were putting in these guitars. I never understood why they would install a bridge with a specific purpose that could never be met.

But needless to say, when in doubt, get an OFR and all your problems will be solved.

What do you mean? I read on JCF that the OFR is a drop-in replacement for Jackson.
That was one of the questions I had about what low profile really means and yes in terms of replacement, too.

thanks

I agree. Also I feel the OFR fine tuners have more more range?, and it stays 'more' in tune, and feels more precise.

Did the OFR swap perfectly even though the originals were low-profile?
thanks

Re: Floyd Rose question

The OFR is not a drop in replacement for a Schaller Floyd or Jackson 590 ( which is a schaller). The bolts protrude too much on the OFR and the Schaller is mounted 1/16 closer to the neck

Re: Floyd Rose question

pigbacon - further down in this thread it appears it isn't a drop-in swap.
How did you go about fitting the OFR to the JT580LP Guitar(s)?

I have MIJ Dinkys and a MIJ soloist....

thanks

He's talking about the 580 (JT580LP), not the 590.

Re: Floyd Rose question

I've been using Floyd's for quite some time. Half the time my guitar friends come to me if they need help setting up their Floyd's. Sure, they're a complicated beast to tackle, but usually a licensed Floyd rose is going to be nowhere near the quality and performance of a REAL Floyd.

Sry for the late reply.. I never said a OFR was NOT a direct replacement for a 580lp... I guess the confusion was that, I mentioned that I would want a lopro floyd.. the reason is because I actually like the lopro design..

BTW the OFR is not exactly a direct drop in for a 580lp... YES it will work but there will be a small gap on one side of the OFR.. because the routs arnt exactly the same.. no big deal UNLESS you have OCD's about such a thing I do.. ALSO the 6th or 3rd string lock screws for the saddles MIGHT be too far back and overhang on the rear rout as well.. If it doesnt.. It will be close..See Im a forum member to JCF ..probably read the same thread as you did.. Name is the same as here BTW

I also mentioned that most people swap out a 580 for an OFR to say they have an OFR.. its not very cost effective as the 580lp works great and to spend 200 would be a waste of money as the return on your investment would be small if any..AND it really wont increase the value of a guitar IMO

in saying that.. its your money.. I swapped out my DK-2 trem not to long ago... I had a chrome 580lp and decided to go with a almost new black 580lp instead of a black OFR..Even if someone gave me an OFR.. i wouldnt swap my 580 out..

2 things i will do to the 580 in my DK-2.. brass block and to block it.. been meaning to do both things but im a tad lazy

i wonder if some of you even know how to setup your floyd.

i do..its not rocket science now..I have almost zero issues with my 580lp and best trem i have ever owned....ive owned a guitar with an OFR but its been awhile..
