I have come to the conclusion that its just not worth it
-break a string guitar is ****ed
-hassle setting it up
-hassle intonating the damn thing
-thins the guitars tone since a lot of wood has been gutted form the guitar
-severely brightens the guitars sound
-kills sustain
-looks ugly
-used as a crutch for people who cant really play guitar
I am personally done with them.
kills sustain? tell that to my 2 floyd-equiped les pauls... those monsters sustain for ages!
brightens the tone? tell that to my 2 floyd-equiped les pauls; they have a sweet, singing highs with solid lows and huge mids!
Intonation: do it once, and then it's set forever.
hassle setting it up: not a big deal, it's as difficult or easy as a wilkinson.
The only thing I don't like about a floyd is that I always lose my hex key for the lock on the bridge. I don't use locking nuts, just locking tuners and a graphtech nut.
+1 The tone things: thins brightens... are just a matter of taste. And it being ugly is also just a matter of taste. Yes it's PITA to set up THE FIRST TIME. Then it's done and if you don't change string gauge every week it's not that big of a deal. I've intonated my FR once in 10 years and I've used 9's 10's 11's 9-46, 9-50 and 10-52 in it and had no problem with the intonation so you don't even have to intonate it every time.
To all of you who think that FR are too much work, well that's just LIFE. Nothing ain't free and usually not-so-easy.
I thought this guy was banned.... anyways...
The whole crutch for people who can't play well... what a bunch of bull**** ... Some of the best players in the world have FR equipped guitars as there #1 what planet are you from?
Sooooo....Vai, Satch, Petrucci, and Van Halen can't really play guitar?

IMO a Floyd shouldn't be retrofitted on a guitar, a guitar must be designed from the ground up to ge used with a Floyd. This means using basswood or Mahogany to balance out the slight brightness and slight metallic tone, and using slightly hotter pickups. You take a strat with typical strat single coils, and alder body and add a Floyd, and yes, it will sound thin. To compensate add a Big Block.
So I was right....Putting a FR on a strat that originally had a stock bridge, makes for a brighter, thinner tone? I have an 80s strat like that with a FR and I never play it..It currently has a Fralin SP43 in the bridge spot, but I stole the CS Fat 50s neck and middle and stuck them in my recent blonde strat...

When using a single-coil in the bridge still, yeah, I can see that happening. The bridge is sometimes thin anyway. Swap the pickguard and through a full-size humbucker in there or put a Hot Rails in it.
In both of my Floyded guitars I run the JB in the bridge. Neither have a big block and sound rather fat. They don't float either, just dive only.
