Floyd rose sucks

Re: Floyd rose sucks

Best tremolo I have used is a hip shot remolo system on my Lipe Virtuoso. Stays in tune no matter what and does not go wack with setup when you restring or break a string.

True floating bridges like Floyds and Ibanez Edge Pros can be a pain, no doubt, once dialed in, they are great and hold tune. I do not do crazy bombs or anything, but use the whammy bar more for serious single note vibrato and adding some character to unique triads when soloing. A properly cut nut is important for a non locking tremolo system.

Re: Floyd rose sucks

I have come to the conclusion that its just not worth it

-break a string guitar is ****ed
-hassle setting it up
-hassle intonating the damn thing
-thins the guitars tone since a lot of wood has been gutted form the guitar
-severely brightens the guitars sound
-kills sustain
-looks ugly
-used as a crutch for people who cant really play guitar

I am personally done with them.

ive missed wyldeguy.

Re: Floyd rose sucks

kills sustain? tell that to my 2 floyd-equiped les pauls... those monsters sustain for ages!

brightens the tone? tell that to my 2 floyd-equiped les pauls; they have a sweet, singing highs with solid lows and huge mids!

Intonation: do it once, and then it's set forever.

hassle setting it up: not a big deal, it's as difficult or easy as a wilkinson.

The only thing I don't like about a floyd is that I always lose my hex key for the lock on the bridge. I don't use locking nuts, just locking tuners and a graphtech nut.

+1 The tone things: thins brightens... are just a matter of taste. And it being ugly is also just a matter of taste. Yes it's PITA to set up THE FIRST TIME. Then it's done and if you don't change string gauge every week it's not that big of a deal. I've intonated my FR once in 10 years and I've used 9's 10's 11's 9-46, 9-50 and 10-52 in it and had no problem with the intonation so you don't even have to intonate it every time.

To all of you who think that FR are too much work, well that's just LIFE. Nothing ain't free and usually not-so-easy.

Been using Floyds on my super strats for over 25 yrs and never have to mess with them once their originally setup and intonated.
The only thing that sucks is when you break a string live , your tuning is screwed but nothing is perfect.
I also use the original Floyds that don't have the fine tuners on them as well. Floyds are best bridges for real tremolo work and floating bridge setups in my book.

Re: Floyd rose sucks

I have one on my old Kramer Pacer but I am usually a fixed bridge guy.

For me the oddest thing about using a Floyd is the slight flutter you get, even when chording (I use 3 springs on my Floyd). But it is something I got use to and deal with. I find I don't break strings too much as long as I use a fairly heavy string. Intonation was fairly easy and I have had no problems with the guitar staying in tune. I went with a big brass block on the floyd so my tone is fairly thick but it definitely is not as "full" as a hardtail.

I like using a whammy once in a while - for me it just provides a different approach to a song

Re: Floyd rose sucks

Thats why I ONLY like flush mounted floyds. I had a Kramer '85 baretta RI a few years back and it would sing all day long! sustain like you wouldnt believe......but on the other hand I have also played other floyded guitars that wouldnt sustain at all

Re: Floyd rose sucks

I thought this guy was banned.... anyways...

The whole crutch for people who can't play well... what a bunch of bull**** ... Some of the best players in the world have FR equipped guitars as there #1 what planet are you from?

He was just regurgitating a Dave Mustaine troll line.

Re: Floyd rose sucks

Sooooo....Vai, Satch, Petrucci, and Van Halen can't really play guitar?

or Brad Gillis or Neal Schon or Alex Lifeson?

I've been using FRs for abotu 27 years. I'll admit to not being able to really play guitar, but I think all these cats can play just fine with a FR. especially considering that guys like Gillis and Schon are 2 of the very few people that were able to even get PRS to put FRs on guitars for them.

1. EVH does SUCK really bad
2. Vai and Satch really aren't that good
3. Floyds are crap compared to say, a vintage Strat bridge with a tremol-no or a trem-setter.
I can't say anything of Petrucci, as I haven't listen to his music.

Re: Floyd rose sucks

IMO a Floyd shouldn't be retrofitted on a guitar, a guitar must be designed from the ground up to ge used with a Floyd. This means using basswood or Mahogany to balance out the slight brightness and slight metallic tone, and using slightly hotter pickups. You take a strat with typical strat single coils, and alder body and add a Floyd, and yes, it will sound thin. To compensate add a Big Block.

So I was right....Putting a FR on a strat that originally had a stock bridge, makes for a brighter, thinner tone? I have an 80s strat like that with a FR and I never play it..It currently has a Fralin SP43 in the bridge spot, but I stole the CS Fat 50s neck and middle and stuck them in my recent blonde strat...

When using a single-coil in the bridge still, yeah, I can see that happening. The bridge is sometimes thin anyway. Swap the pickguard and through a full-size humbucker in there or put a Hot Rails in it.

In both of my Floyded guitars I run the JB in the bridge. Neither have a big block and sound rather fat. They don't float either, just dive only. One is maple, the other is alder.

Warren DeMartini gets great results using alder Strat bodies with a Floyd and humbucker (his Duncan RTM or JB).

I think that's where all the complaints regarding Floyds came come since everyone was retrofitting them. These days, most Floyd equipped shredder axes you find in a music store will have hot humbucking pickups and in most cases mahogany or basswood bodies- and therefore no one has really complained lately of a Floyd giving a thinner tone. John Suhr indicated a Floyd gives extra clarity which some players prefer.

You'd need hot strat pickups with a darker tone to balance out the brightness. Again, it's designing from the ground up.

The Fralin SP43 is very P90ish....I'm pretty much an anti-humbucker in a strat kinda guy also..I May end up selling this strat anyway, cause it collects dust!

When I play a strat(s)....I prefer the 6 screw vintage style bridge...No FR for me!
