Floyd Rose tremolo mounting

I want to mount a FR trem flush against the body so it can't be whammy'd upwards. Also, I want the string height correct. Last time I mounted s FR the string height was to high from 12th fret on. I once read that a non-floating FR needs to have the neck shimmed or the trem needs to be recess mounted to the body and if you didn't do one of these things the string height would be off. Recess mounting seems viable cause i can always screw out on the post if height is low but I'd rather not take the router route. My question is, can correct string height be achieved without shimming or recessing? Thanks.

Re: Floyd Rose tremolo mounting

The correct way to do a non-recessed dive only Floyd is in the building stage of the body to have the neck pocket routed on an angle. That said the only options for adding one aftermarket are to either recess it and make it full floating which you can block in the trem cavity to stop the pull up or to shim the neck. You will need to use an angled shim the whole length of the pocket since it will be fairly thick near the end to make up the angle. You can't just use a thin strip of wood on the back edge or a guitar pick or something like that leaving an air gap between the neck screws. That will cause neck issues and a rising tongue over time.

Re: Floyd Rose tremolo mounting

I don't think so.

A Flush mount Floyd is a lot harder to pull off than it seems, since bridge height really can't be adjusted.

A neck heel routed at an angle helps, like what Warmoth offers.

My EBMM Axis came with a flush mount floyd, with the neck already angled. To get the action even lower where I wanted, I had a tech shim the neck and bridge.

My EVH striped has an angled neck pocket, that one doesn't need a shim, though the bridge sits at a slight angle.

My Charvel has a flush mount but the bridge sits too high for my tastes and floats a bit.

The best solution if you want to easily get low action is to get a recessed Floyd, (non angled neck pocket) and use one of the many devices on the market to block the trem from moving up

I may be mistaken, but isn't it possible to recess a floyd without making it floating?

Re: Floyd Rose tremolo mounting

I got that going on on my franken-Lotus with a RG470 neck and Schaller. Got lucky and the action is just right for me.
