Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

NOTE I AM A NOVICE GUITAR PLAYER AND AM JUST SEEKING INFORMATION FROM MORE SEASONED PLAYERS SO I CAN UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS OF A FLOYD ROSE. ARE THERE ANY? THANK YOU.

BASED ON MY NOVICE LEVEL HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS: Coming from a newbie- I know some of you guys swear by them but I don’t get why. With Wilkinsons out there and regular and vintage Fender trems, why do you guys like them? Is a Floyd Rose really necessary? Please educate me. Other than being able to “flutter” I don’t get why people use them when they can't just use a regular tremolo.

I have a few friends who are amazing metal guitar players and one of them plays a Fat Strat with a regular Fender tremolo and the other plays a Fender Eric Johnson signature Strat equipped with a vintage Fender tremolo. Both of these guitars don’t have Floyds and those two friends of mine shriek and dive bomb and do crazy whammy bar effects just like the best of them. Their guitars stay in tune or they retune them a tad maybe at a break- like we break once every hour and a half or so. It’s no big deal-

It’s too bad that I have a fear of guitars equipped with a Floyd because every time I’m in any one of the used music stores in town they always have these really awesome beauty 80s Japanese guitars for sale for a song but the only problem is they all have Floyd Rose tremolo systems. I just saw an 80s made in Japan Ibanez RG550 that I was droolling over for $200 bucks or a Fernandez “The Function” for $140 bucks or an old Jackson or Charvel. Awesomely built guitars, but in my mind, my excitement was quickly dampened once I saw the - Floyd, which is a pain to set up and change strings on.

So I’m asking as a Newbie- what are the benefits if any of a Floyd? I love metal and dive bombs and stuff but after watching my best guitar player friends it seems all the whammybar wanking you’d ever need to do can be achieved by a regular trem or a Wilkinson. Why bother with a Floyd? To me they just seem like a pain in the ass.

Maybe from a newbie point of view it's hard to see the benefits I dunno. Any comments?

Strat off with the Wilkie. gain some knowledge and experience, and youll probabaly dig a Floyd sometime in the not to distant future.
They do require more efprt, but no pain no ggain.
No need to jump right inot the Floyd Rose. Wait till you find someone who ahs one to paly it and show you how they work.
I usd to think I wasnt nto Floyds but now I have several.
PS- wahats wrong with my keybpoard?
I cant ever type even one senetence =fast right??
Im going to try a different one./

I dunno, to me I need it because I "feel" it, so it's not a pain. IMO if you're not feelin' a FR within your music than stay far away coz it'll just get in the way. I feel like a whammy is just a part of the music more than a device, 'cept when I'm tweakin' it.

I play Jackson's as well and they mostly come stock with them and they're heavy duty so you can dish the punishment and stay in tune.

Once again, I personally I think you gotta feel them. There was a time they seemed scary to me as well, but one day I just felt it. Now, it's no biggie at all. String changing isn't even as tedious as it seems. I enjoy the mechanics actually.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

There isn't any need for them, plus if you break a string they go totally out of tune.

I mean I don't hate them but I swear on Satan's tail that I will never own another guitar with that retarded tremolo again.

Even if I never used the bar, I would have a Floyd on everything that could fit one. I just like the feel, the sound, the stability (except a string break). Nothing like a big chunk of metal that means business.

..come to think of it, why wouldn't you have a Floyd?

because almost every other type of bridge works better.

Floyds are the only way to go.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

well the tune-o-matic on my SG and the six-screw Fender trem on my Fender stay in tune a lot better than the Floyd on my old BC Rich ever did. i take my personal experience over that of randoms on the 'net you know.

a floyd rose is just a lot of fancy mechanics to accomplish something a proper set-up should handle just fine.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

I got a Floyd, would much rather have a Kahler

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

Take your properly setup SG and a properly setup floyd super-strat; play them for 30 minutes each - then let the Strobo Stomp tell you the truth.

Floyd always wins. Less string length to be affected, plus the lack of nut and bridge friction. It is a better mouse trap, but I guess its too fancy for some.

I don't think a Floyd is for everyone, it does require....hmmm, how to say this politely....a proper grasp of guitar physics? Its not overly complicated, but it sure seems that a lot of people don't understand it.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

Anyone who thinks Floyd's go out of tune, clearly was only playing a crappy licensed one which surely doesn't count.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

Does anyone else find it ironic that you don't need a Floyd to play Pink Floyd?

Well, it was probably a licensed floyd on that NJ Warlock, as it usually is. My NT Warlock came with an OFR and it NEVER goes out of tune. I replace the strings one at a time, stick to one guage so tuning and intonation is hardly a problem and it's usually the first axe I'll grab.

I am pretty sure if you tried a real floyd rose or at least a licensed of high quality like Gotoh or Schaller... You'd be pleasantly surprised. I mean isn't it like saying "Gibsons are absolute crap because I tried an Epiphone and it went out of tune."

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

yeah but Gibsons are absolute crap...:smokin:

yeah i agree i had one put on my epiphone demon (my favourite guitar ever) (it was meant to have a real floyd he put a bottom of the line copy in) and it went out of tune all the time but it was cool cos i was 15-16 and like OMG FLOYD

If you break a string with a guitar with any kind of tremolo, floating, vintage not resting on the body,it will go out of tune.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

OFRs stay in tune better because they lock at both ends.
There's no chance of tuner slippage, binding in the nut, or strings popping out of the nut.
A high quality Floyd like a OFR, Ibanez Edge (MIJ), Gotoh, Kahler Steeler, or higher end Ping, will stay intune all day long.

Since most are set up floating, and most guitars with them have a deeper route, you can
do pulls ups as well as dive bombs.

Just make sure your strings are fully stretched before locking them down,
and that when your in tune, that the Floyd base plate is level with the guitar tops surface. Not pulled forward or dropping back into the route.

Re: Floyd Rose users- educate me. Rite Now Floyds make me freak- Change my viewpoint

my favourite trem is a FRO.... great trem... i've never been able to use Fender trems, 2 post or 6 screw in the same fashion as a floyd... for that Vai and Van Halen type tricks a non-locking trem never works for me.. that being said out of my 20 some odd guitars i have 1 FRO, 2 cheap copies, and 2 nice copies.... the rest are vintage and 2 post non-locking trems... The 2 cheaper Jacksons i have with cheap trems suck... they are not the best Floyds... the fine tuners are not the greatest, the trem posts need replacement when they were brand new as they rocked in the breeze too much, the allen screws strip really easy, and the nut's give off that sitar sound if you don't lock them down right-(part of that issue is the Jackson headstock design)!

my favouite Floyd copies i have is an old Edge trem that i plan to make a guitar for... and i have a 1989 Fernandes Super Strat with a quality Head Crasher trem on it that is a very well made hardened metal trem... the best part was i picked up that Fernandes strat for $99 with gig bag at a pawn shop....

i use a few of my strats vintage and 2 post trems a fair bit... i can stay in tune for a few dives... i really don't use locking tuners often but i have one axe with them on it and they don't really help a hell of a lot, but i like the faster re-string time they offer..... my cheap arse 1999 MIM strat i keep beside my bed on a stand 24/7 stays in tune pretty good now that i adjusted it.. sometimes a string or 2 will stick sharp after a big dive but in general it stays in tune well, and it is a stock cheap guitar (besides a Duncan in it)

in the future my gear plans are for some better quality examples of guitars i own already... i hope to do a warmoth built around the FRO bridge... i hope to get a new tele... and i have hope of getting a new American Fender strat of some sort someday in the next few years as well...
