Floyd Rose Versions

Hey guys,

I thought I'd start a new thread to discuss the various incarnations of the Floyd Rose, including which ones are good and which ones should be avoided.

It seems like the Original Floyd Rose is the best one out there, but how do the Floyd Rose II, Schaller, Kahler, and other varients perform and/or compare. I'd love to hear details about what the different approaches are, etc.

My experience is limited almost entirely to Ibanez Lo-Pro Edge trems. I always liked the feel of them, and really like the low profile fine tuners that stay out of the way of my rather large right hand. I know these were made from cheaper metal and would wear down over time and get intonation problems and loose the smooth feel.

The OFR, Schaller, are great units. I really like the OFR alot. The Schaller is also very high quality and I like that it is a little more compact than the OFR. I have heard the Kahler steeler is really good but, I have not ever tried one.

I'm not a trem wizard, but as far as I know one of the main differences between Floyd Rose style trems and some others is that the others are top mounted (like the Kahler bridges) as opposed to having the body routed out for a Floyd Rose trem.

Other guys with more knowledge will give their 0.02

but i thought the top or rear mount didnt affect the tunning, you know if it stays in tune well or not... anyways the edge from ibanez are great, but i guess that the OFR is the best out there, i´ll choose anyday...

I have a schaller myself and it works fine.
It´s the only floyd that i have experience with though, but anyway...

I have a gotoh floyd on one of my custom strats, and it's rock solid. Easily on a par with an OFR quality-wise, but with slightly angled back tuners and a better bar tightening system. Ernie Ball Musicman use them on some models.

I seem to get the best results with OFRs and Ibanez Edge series stuff. I've never tried the Schaller units but they seem to have a good rep.

When it comes to trems, I need to have the best. "Good enough" never is.
