Floyd rose?

With a floyd rose do you need a wide neck and would it work with an sg? I mean the SG neck is realy quite thin and Im also wondering can it get realy low action without fret buzz

The neck on an SG is fixed, so changing it is not possible without a very expensive procedure.

Not to worry, you don't need a new neck, Floyd's are often put on guitars with thin necks.... such as ibanez, kramer, ESP and so on.

You will, however, need to route your guitar in order to fix the floyd rose to it. You may even need to take a big chunk out of it if you want the floyd to 'pull up'. I'd suggest talking to a local luthier or guitar tech and get a quote...

It will be a very expensive job, it'd probably be cheaper to buy a floyd-equiped guitar.

Of course you need a neck for a floyd! :laugh2: I think you meant to type "thick neck", the answer is no. Look at all the Ibanez's and Jackson's with floyds and thin necks. You can get a low action with no buzz if there setup well, just lke any other bridge. The only caveat with them is that they can be a b!tch to re-string if your not familiar with them. It would also take a lot of work to put a floyd on an SG, it might not even be possible because of the thin bodies on them.

Well the thin body thing won't be a problom cause Im thinking of it for an SG that Im considering making fir myself which means I just have to make it with a thicker body. Is there any trem that would be able to get a low action with no fret buzz. My G400 is set up like that (about 3mm above the 12th fret) but it has a tune-o-matic.

Forgot to mention it will probably have aneck through body

Floyding an SG is a bitch,, but it´s possible. Since you´re building your own I won´t go into the "Vintage - Stock discussion". But as far as being possible: definitely

But 3mm at the 12th = low action? :saeek: :rolleyes: I consider half of that to be high, 3mm is (not joking) Slide height for me. Standard fpr me is 1.14 mm on the high e and 1.3 on the low e .... ;)

wtf man!

3 mm is about same for me (on the bass side) if its any lower i dont feel my playing properly ( i like to have to fight agaisnt the guitar a little it makes playing more fun)

i think you'd be fine but i'd make the body thicker to avoid it sounding too thin...

a floyd will make a thick bodied guitar sound a lot thinner and the SG has a thin body by tradittion.

i'd also have it not floating for the same reasons + easier restrings and not having to worry about hand placement + possibility of altered tunings.

out of curiosity, theres a few floyd models available in the UK, just wondering what the difference with the original and LO PRO type models are (ie if one can achieve lower action)

The 3mm is just arough measurement with a ruler not sure the specifics.

I was wondering the same question as nuntious aswel.

As far as action goes: where do you measure from? I fret the string at the firstr, and use a pick as a depth guage. SO my "measurement" is bottom of string to top of 12th fret ;)

But BTT: The difference in a "lo-Pro" Floyd (Jackson JT-580LP, Lo-Pro-TRS/Edge, Floyd Pro....) to an original floyd is the way the strings are locked and whjere the fine tuners are positioned. The routs are slighjtly different as well...

If you look closely, the Original has the "classic" locking screws, whick are also the lever the fine tuning screw moves. In the Pro, the saddles have a lever molded onto the bottom of them, and the locking is done by shorter allen screws on the upper side of the saddle :)

AFAIK, No. Just the difference in design, ubut I´ve never used the PRO myself.

BTW Matt, the big question is: Is your WIFE gonna let you bring your Jackson?? Or is she gonna hold it hostage to make sure you come back? :D:D:D

Yup, The pivots have alen bolt holes to raise or lower them.

Travel on most Floyd posts is well over 1/2", more than enough room for most. Properly mounted you shouldn´t need anywhere near that length ;)
