I've been using an Orange Micro Dark 20-watt hybrid head for just over a year as of today. I use both a PPC112 cab and the smaller PPC108 cab. I know how to find my idea of a "clean" sound from it, but what I like to know from owners of this amp is where you usually place your gain control and what degree of gain tones you prefer to use.

It seems my preferred gain setting is somewhere between 10 and 11 o'clock on the gain knob with the appropriate volume and "shape" control adjustments to get my idea of what a decent gain tone would sound like. With these settings I can set my guita volume controls to get a passable "clean" tone and raise it for the grit that I need.

Wow I've been seeing a lot of micro dark forums lately. I don't have one myself, but have been intrigued for quite some time. How are the clean volumes? Is the dirty side at least giggable?

I got one a few weeks ago, and use it with the gain just past 1 o'clock. That's where the last gain stage has just kicked in and makes for a great lead tone without a pedal. The cleans I get that way are with the guitar volumes down, but they aren't super clean at all...more like hairy cleans. This is with the volume at 2 o'clock. The cleans are better if I turn up the volume a bit more and set the gain just below that last gain stage, using a boost for the lead tones. Beyond that, the amp seems pretty good at cleaning up if you pick lightly and the gain isn't too high. Then you can do the edge of breakup all with your picking hand.

When I had one, (let a friend buy it since he had no amp) I ran it at 6,6,6 mostly, right around 1 o clock for everything. Wasn't trying to be edgy, it just sounded nice and loud with not too much gain and some treble bite. Clean will never get PERFECTLY clean, even with my strat with 69 pickups. You do have to play with the volume a bit on your guitar to situate it right for the cleans, but cleans will be nowhere near gigging volume. With the right cab and settings, I can see the thing playing over a drummer, but it also depends on the drummer's style and what music is being played. If endless blastbeats forget about it.

Problem is, since the power section is solid state, you can't set the volume too high without getting the typical solid state hard clipping. BUT if you REALLY like the tone of the preamp section, you can run it through the power section of another, more powerful amp being used as a slave and it'll do anything. It got me really curious to try out one of the Orange Dual Darks but they're so damn rare where I live I guess.
