For all you Peavey Fans (Past and Present)

I was trolling through my local Pawn Shop and he has two Peavey amps that caught my eye.
1 was a RENOWN 4OO, the other is a Bandit.

I see the Bandit mention alot here, but finding any feed back on the Renown 400 (other than Harmony-Central) is pretty scares.
I have a tube amp and was looking at getting something SS ( lower maint.) and these are in the price range I was looking at.
How are Peaveys for relaibility and overall sound as compaired to other SS amps and what did/do you like/dislike about either one of these amps?

BTW: The Renown was 2x12 Scorpions, the Bandit 1x12(?) Schefield

I have been following Danza's thread about SS amps, but would like some feed back on either one of these specifically.

Thanks

Re: For all you Peavey Fans (Past and Present)

I have a renown 400 since the mid eighties. Other then a good cleaning needed on some of the pots it has held up well. I don't use it much. I keep it at a buddies house, where I jam with it once in a while. I would not consider gigging with it, because I can't get any really good overdrive tones out of it without pedals. It is way loud and the onboard distortion is almost useless. It has some good cleans and the verb is not bad. From a reliability stand-point I'd give it rave reviews though.

Re: For all you Peavey Fans (Past and Present)

The "loudness" of the Renown is one of my concerns. I already have a "loud" amp. It did sound pretty good though. Maybe the one I was looking at had a better OD curcuit, but I kind of liked the way it sounded. But, since I couldn't crank it, like I would at home, it might not be as good at higher volumes.
Maybe I will look at the Bandit a little harder. Just have to get my mind past "needing" more than 1 speaker on an amp.

Re: For all you Peavey Fans (Past and Present)

The bandit will have more in the high gain sounds than the Renown 400. The newer bandits with Transtube vs. SuperSat will sound even better for the gain sounds. Just about every Peavey clean sound reminds me of a honky country type clean (not a derogetory statement). Good amps in general, just depends on what sounds you need as far the Renown 400 vs. Bandit.

Re: For all you Peavey Fans (Past and Present)

I'm sure there there are some people out there digging the Overdrive on the 400. I just gave my opinion on it. As far as the loudness..... YES... it is UBER LOUD and that is not just my opinion. :)

:bigthumb: : Thanks guys:
Besides a decent sound, reliability a priority. If I can get both, that would be great! From what I can gather, the Peavey SS line of amps are built like tanks.
I am going to go back down there at lunch and get some better specs and details (like exact model # etc.). That might help in your providing better feed back.
But I will check out the Bandit alittle closer, because a good OD/DIST "sound" is what I need. My MM 212 is great for clean and some decent Tube OD, but it is not a metal amp for sure:14:

Get back after lunch.
