For old guys only...

I Like big Guitars And I can not lie....

Loved this guitar body style since 1974 or so when I saw an ad for an Ibanez Destroyer featuring Cub Coda of Brownsville Station . The original source of Smoking In The Boy's Room. From there it grew because it also reminded me of what car I thought I would own one day but never have, a '57 Chevy. The upper horn of an Explorer-esqe guitar always reminded me of the right rear quarter panel. Bought one of the best when I bought my 1979 Hamer Standard in 1982. Funny thing is I have never owned a Gibber Explorer.

First one I spotted was a magazine pic and Rick Derringer was playing it.

The first time I thought I saw one live, it turned out to be Buck Dharma's Vulcan. I thought Buck might have sawed up an Explorer to get that shape.

Actual live sighting is a toss up between Iron Maiden and Def Leppard in the 80's. Would have to review ticket stubs for the tiebreaker.

I went with a Destroyer.

Edit: Found a pic of that GP mag with Rick.

I used to have a poster on my bedroom wall of Hetfield playing his "More Beer" explorer on stage, which was the first time I was conscious of them.

...in the flesh, I'm sure I must have on a shop wall etc. at some point but I'm not aware of ever having seen one to be honest...and certainly have never played one.

Can't stand playing a Vee, but an Explorer is surprisingly comfy on a strap. It's long, but a Firebird is an inch longer each direction.

Only ever recall seeing a single one in a store. Picked it up, say down, strummed one or two chords, noticed the giant hunk of wood getting in the way of my right arm and noped out forever.

I am feeling really old, since it was the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. There was probably Don Preston as sideman for George Harrison.(Not the best pic, but click on it to get the full view).
