Forgotton how good the Explorer is.....

This is my beat-up '96 Explorer, loaded with a Custom & Jazz; I just might have to look into a smaller case for it. I've tried to use other guitars as my #1 over the years, but it just hasn't worked out. My 335 is a really close second, but I'm a little uneasy that such an expensive guitar might be stolen if I took it to a gig. That's the one area where I like the gigantic case, it'd be slightly difficult to sneak out the door with that aircraft carrier under your arm. Lately I've sort of been GASing for another one as I'd love a mahogany Explorer with a Kahler, but I don't think I could bring myself to cut up this one.

I love the colors on that one–off while with the white pickguard looks awesome!

Yeah, Id love to have one from the 80s with no pickguard and a kahler..Been tempted to grab one of the Epi 84s. (I think the model is) Like the white one!

I couldn't justify buying one of the 80s Explorers for a few reasons...
First the vast majority of them are alder with a maple neck and sound absolutely nothing like a mahogany Explorer. Second they used two different Kahler tremolos on those; a stud-mounted 2200 or 2220 as well as a flat-mounted Kahler Flyer. The 2200/2220 is a good bridge and every bit as stable as its flat-mounted counterpart provided that it's set up properly. The Flyer OTOH is a piece of s*** and never should have left the design stage. Lastly the build quality of those guitars is really hit and miss, not to mention the "vintage" prices these things are starting to demand. I'd much rather pay $600 for a used '76 RI and have a stud-mounted Kahler Hybrid installed.

The Epis are great guitars for the money, but I've never been blown away by one. I also question the wood they're made out of since they're so much lighter than my Explorer.

I love the colors on that one–off while with the white pickguard looks awesome!

For a while I've been planning to change it to a B/W/B guard with zebra pickups, I just haven't ordered the guard yet.

Re: Forgotton how good the Explorer is.....

If you are talking bout the attic, it gets way too hot up there. they would warp for sure. Im afraid to keep them in the garage. I lease a climate controlled storage facility. Would save me a bunch of money and give me more options to get a plain one, but afraid the heat will ruin them.
hmmm, new thread idea....
