Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Thanx Evan!That's a great Idea.
My first tought is a New PATB!Somehing not Hot ,but not weak.
Something that can sing and cry ,but can whisper an laugh too.
An Overwound PU like the Diablo with A2 ,but in PATB shell.I dunno ,i would like to have a PATB with thick ,articulate and not agressive way.Something that rwally shines and dies with the amp and the guitar player! An even EQ would be the Best Idea.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Sounds like fun, I'm in. :D

I thought I read a while ago that some of the Lil' designs are more difficult to make due to the smaller magnets? An A8 HB or some money SCs would be sweet.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

1) Type: Dual Blade humbucker with really thin blades

2) DC Res: near 15K

3) Resonance freq: near 4-4.5KHz

4) EQ: B/low-M/hi-M/T - 6/6/4/7 or so. (A little added highs with a low resonance freq will make a rough growl....what do you say?)

5) Magnet: Alnico V.

6) Extra feature: Slightly mismatched coils for more breath and that trademark Duncan PAF vibe.

7) Mission: Huge sound with punch, tightness, focus, CLARITY and roar.

8) Name: Hmmm..........Mean Machine, maybe

Well......oK, that's just a dream of mine.....

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

How did we ever reach an agreement on the brobucker? I completely forgot.

The goal of the Brobucker was a hot/overwound vintage style pickup. From that starting point we used polls to determine mag, guage, resistance, cosmetics, et al. I bet if you search you can find the original polls.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I vote that we make a single coil or something that sounds like a single coil, as we've already done the Humbucker thing.

But i know the majority want humbuckers....so looks like its gunna go that way again

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Hmmm..a custom pickup for my custom guitar (now that I have something worthy of one)...

here's some of my thoughts...

For me personally....Prolly would never see it...but I'd like to see.....SH5 custom EQ curve and output......with an Alnico 5 magnet..NOT a C5..goptta retain the low mids, mids and high mids of the custom...just a bit more "round".

I.e. we had the ultimate "hot" PAF with the brobucker. Now lets see the "ultimate distortion class" bucker.

Another idea...the "neck" match to the Brobucker..i.e. the utimate PAF neck pickup we all would want made...the ultimate cross between a 59n ,PGn, Jazz and APII.

i like the idea of a modified JB. maybe a jb with a tad more bottom end and more harmonic overtones.

+1 for alnico

If it ends up being a (way) tighter JB, count me in.

I'd be all over this too...taking Duncan's most praised yet most cursed Humbucker..THE love it or hate it pup.... and addressing the issues most people have with it..even those who love it......lack of lows and muddy low E and A strings.....while (trying) to keep alll the excellent things about it...wonderful mid complexity....it's nice balance between "Vintage" and "distortion class" output, and its "cut thru the mix" ability.

I'm curious to see what everyone comes up with. I think this may be MUCH more difficult though...coming to mutual decision...being that there is no "direction" as there was with the Brobucker.

But if the specs people come up with suit me, count me in :bigthumb:

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Very cool, thanks Evan! I'm in whatever we decide on. I'd kind of like to shoot for the ultimate neck PAF to match the Brobucker. Suprisingly my UGD Antiquity in the neck sounds pretty dang nice and mates to the Brobucker pretty well, but it may be even better with fewer windings.

As it is:
A2 Antiquity mag
Deguassed to 22
Mismatched coils
9.2k originally now about 8.7k depending on the temperature

As a bridge pup, it's a snarly beast in the lines of a PG with more depth and attitude. But as a neck pup it's warm, very articulate yet airy.

Covered/Double cream of course!

That Lynch Super Vee looks awfully tasty though!

Hmm...let's see how this turns out. I woudl be down for another pickup as long as it's something I would use.

Very cool Evan!

Cool idea! The current Duncan line is filling my needs fine, but it will be interesting to see what we can come up with. Maybe a dual-blade humbucker like the Dimebucker, but designed for maximum neck shreddage?

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I'd take a mini-bucker or P90, since SD's selection is awesome, but limited. Perhaps a filtertron type pup?

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I'm in like Flynn. :)

I'd like the airiness of the PG bridge combined with the tight, deep low end and overall output of the C5.

I'd also be pretty happy with a wind similar to Beneddeto's A6 'bucker. ;)

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Wow Evan that sounds like an absolutely grand, creative, & generous offer. Damn :onder:, I wasn't registered before the timeline that you set. Eh, regardless, this will be my "hello" and reason to actually set up an account for future interaction. I've been visiting, and reading indepth for the past 2 weeks now + soaking up info on some excellent pickups and knowledgable forum gurus. As a matter of fact MJ is working on an old pickup of mine as I type... but I never thought to 'sign up' for the ride. Oh well.

Kudos to the Seymour Duncan team for what I've noticed in a short while has really been spectacular for the SD fans, and music in general.

As this seems like a great idea, I can imagine it getting chaotic too just a bit. So even if I can't participate in the booty I'll at least try and give some ideas here and there. The Brobucker seems to be the utmost coolest of efforts and MJ really seemed to put her heart into the run. I wish I could've been a part of that inital February production; I may have to look into a Custom wind at a later date on that little/big number. A second run is an idea (as someone else mentioned previously), seems like a good many are up for the chance to have one, or two still.

Ummmm, let's see.. another idea may be a Custom Shop Production Run of those CC/'59b A2 "Hybrids" that have caught a huge BuZz of FuZz all along the forum tidal pools. That would be tough! It seems like BachToRock added the fuel that sparked a small fire, and I'd imagine that an effort of love with MJ creating the crème brûlée of 2 separate "production model" coils joined into one sensational pickup (I assume from what I've read, I haven't heard or played one BTW). Think about it, Hand Wound & Scattered assymetrical coil winds that measure just over (what was it?) 11K, all with 1 bobbin = '59B {42 wire w/ typical stock wind, but not machine wrapped mind you), &... the 2nd bobbin = Custom-Custom (43 wire w/ typical stock wind with a bit of magic from the fingers that obviously have an unmistakable "touch").

Sound good?

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

i'll be happy if it's something MODERN and ALNICO with fullness and tightness. like one guy said, around 15k res. maybe a little less output than a JB. maybe like a JB with class.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I think we should come up with a neck and middle set (single coils of course) to compliment the brobucker. I don't speak pickup but I'm thinking something like someone suggested earlier in the thread...a tappable pickup which can go from a nice vintage tone to an overwound more midrangy tone by switching to the full windings.

Maybe these could be calibrated to match the brobucker as a set. Maybe HSS with the option of a neck brobucker for HSH? That's what I'd be into. Anyone else interested in something along those lines?
