found a new LP special at GC today

Re: found a new LP special at GC today

This is why we need to have mods approve postings on ye olde content.

Not sure about this software but on some other forums im on threads auto lock after 18 months. The OP or a mod can unlock them. Might be something worthwhile around here.

Re: found a new LP special at GC today

Searching and posting in threads that already exist is the RIGHT way to use a forum.

If everyone did that, we'd have fewer threads, and all threads would contain the most complete version of our communal knowledge

+1 Idk why it's such a big deal to pull a thread from the archives and add to it. If it contributes to the original discussion, it might be useful to someone. Like I6 said, we'd have a lot less threads to go searching through for info.

The problem is that threads that were true 10 years ago arent necessarily true now. Things and times change. No one wants to search through 75 page threads to find their answer. Its also very rare that an old bumped thread has any useful information added to it. Just like this thread.

But this isnt necessarily true. What works for one forum doesnt necessarily work for another. You cant impose a sense of right on wrong on it. You can try to justify why "you think" one is better but that doesnt make it right. Personally i rather dislike logging into a forum and i start reading a thread and think oh ok i got my answer.. so i stop reading and i try it and i find out im wrong so i go back to the forum and read 50 more pages to find the info has changed. That what was true is no longer true... or even worse I hate mining a thread going through pages and pages trying to find a good answer.

Its just different ways of doing the same thing

Granted this thread is a bad example, but the point you make about 10 year old threads not holding valid information anymore is all the more reason to add updates to them. The how to build a hybrid thread is very old, yet people often turn to it, and is updated periodically to keep it fresh with new info, tips, and ideas. You'd rather everyone just start a new thread every time someone wants to ask ask a question or give some new insight?

If a thread stays on track thats great... but many times people dont want to search through 40 pages to find what they want. The hybrid thread works cause the first post is good and doesnt need to be updated. If no one goes back and updates the original post they are a huge PITA to dig through and find the info.

But those types of threads are few and far between.

I dont have an issue with someone starting a new thread... Many times their question is specific to their situation which may or may not be covered and questions like that can get lost or derail mega threads.

I understand your perspective, though much of the knowledge shared here is applicable today, 10 years ago, and maybe even 50 years ago. Much of it isn't applicable today, e.g. wireless systems, but subjects like tubes, effects, guitars...they haven't and aren't changing much.

We're not talking about 75 page threads, we're talking about 1-5 pages.

It makes the forum easier to search and easier to chronicle information. Imagine there was a Les Paul megathread. There we'd see the changes and advancements in the Les Paul over the years. Which would be a value-add. If someone wanted to discuss, say, just the switching, or some individual aspect, of course that merits its own thread. My perspective is that clutter and expansiveness hinder the seeking and finding of information, which in turn hinders the sharing of information, which cyclically degrades the fidelity of the knowledge base over time.

This is a better way of saying what I was hoping to convey. Thank you.

I agree BUT...

9 times out of 10 not that, it's just some dude posting nothing of any real value or dragging up an old dusty thread for no real purpose, case in point here.
