Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

Cost me $250 out the door with RCA power tubes in it. Sounds good, but one of the speaker out jacks is messed up and non-functional. The other works fine though. The amp is very warm sounding just like a bassman is supposed to be. Cosmetics are flat out destroyed. Some newb used some industrial cleaner on the front panel and it's now a nearly 100% silverfaced silverface. The markings are pretty much gone. Of course the cosmetics mean nothing at all to me. Power Lamp is burned out. I'll be running it through the Edana's cabinet until I can get a closed back 4x10 full of copperheads made up for it. I'd post pics, but someone took my cable from the camera and didn't tell me about it.

Bought this beauty at Guitar Stop in Sylva, NC. The owner is cool and he knows his goods. Has lots of cool old guitars laying around in there. Gave me a toothache looking at everything.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

The second speaker jack might have something simple wrong, like the extra tongue on the hot terminal isn't making contact or something......you know the one that runs parallel to break the circuit.

If it were mine, I'd buy a repro blackface panel, and chisel the old one off. Then, it'll look like a beatup old blackface. Actual blackfacing may or may not be worth the money to you.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

I'd buy a new Bassman cabinet for it.

Otherwise, that's a friggin sweet deal! I'd love to have a Bassman, probably #2 on my "what I really want" list after some Marshall.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

Funny thing is that I already have a sweet JTM-45 clone which is a clone of the tweed bassman. I may blackface this one sure enough both cosmetically and internally as well. I'll bet it has the dreaded AB-165 circuit in it. It's all point to point, so it can't be that hard to mod back to blackface specs.

I have a clone of a clone. Funny that...

Dreaded AB165?? I would be happy to take that amp off your hands, my 68 AB165 could use a friend. A nasty nasty rock machine lies in that circuit.

Can't wait to hear it Scott!

I'm jealous that you have the space to crank up a Bassman!

rock on

Dreaded if you're one of those "if it's not a blackface or a tweed it's crap" kinda guys. I'll give it a thorough workout before changing it to see if it rocks as is or not. Your clip sounds pretty good, but there's this wolf note sound that dominates/resonates in a harsh way. What were you using between the tele and the bassman. I heard some delay in there. Was there a booster or OD pedal in there anywhere?

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

lol I have my shed in the backyard of my parent's house where I can crank my Gibson (15 watt, 12" speaker). I can also sit 3 feet away with the speaker pointing at me.

There are perks to living away from the big city! I can't even imagine the thrill of cranking something like that. Geez.

That old clip is just a toss up a mic and mess a bit. Here is the amp with my full attention. Useing a late 70s Hondo LP and a Music Man cab loaded with an EV 18. Bass channel at 6 or 7 on the dial.

BIG 18.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

I need an MP3. I can't use anything flash because this computer is a turd.:grumble:

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

If you go to my soundclick or myspace links, just find BIG 18, hopefully it will work that way.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

I have to buy that one to listen to it. I'm also in a hotel lobby full of people quietly discussing things. I don't know how these 55-65 year olds would respond to me breaking out the seriously searing rock tone on them. I'll check it some other time.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

They stream for free. Your gonna have to get out of the lobby though...lol. The myspace link will be the one for you to hit.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

Does the stream run on flash? If so, I can't use it on this computer. I'll be home to crank this puppy tomorrow anyway. I'm stuck out in the field tonight completing rush surveys that our corporate guys can't seem to get done.

You mean one of those "I determine what sounds good by what people say on forums rather than with my ears" kinda guys? :)

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

Precisely. I have not had time to really work it out yet, so the jury is out for me until such time has passed. Testing something on a cabinet with the wrong ohm rating and no speaker cable within 100 miles isn't what I would call a thorough test. Once I get home and finish moving my little brother's crap I'll give it a more thorough workout on some Vintage 30's in a port city cab at 4 ohms and see if anything needs changing or not. I've wanted to play a blackface or a tweed bassman for a LONG time (since 1992). Closest I've come is playing a tweed reissue which sounded like heaven to me. If this sounds more or less as good in my initial testing I'll leave it as is. If it doesn't I won't.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

I loooooove my '71 SF Export through the Vox Buckingham cab I use it with.

Rock beast fo' sho'.

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

I think that the 70s SF models are great!

Re: Found a nice sounding 72 bassman 50.

Finally got to a computer that will run flash today (my parent's place) and Big 18 is a cool clip. Sounds very nice indeed. I'm gonna jumper this sucker and see if I can't get it into that territory myself. Thus far, I've taken it for a cursory spin on the Edana cabinet until I get the port city cab rewired to the right ohm rating. Man this is gonna be a chore until I can get a 4x10 cab made for this head.

The bright channel is beautiful and smooth. Doesn't like to break up much, but it really sounds great even at 8 ohms. Bass channel breaks up more quickly and evenly, but needs more gain. Haven't bridged the channels yet, but I intend to see what that sounds like once I get the cab re-wired tonight once I get my laundry started. Nice tone I gotta say. I want that bright channel to remain unchanged. Sounds perfect to my ears. I'm reserving judgement on the bass channel until I bridge it to see how both sound together.
