Fralin baseplate.. cure for the common bridge single?

I hear people complain about bridge single coils ALL the time. I was wondering if any of you have used the fralin baseplate on SD pups, or any others. Any examples would be appreciated!

Depends on what you want. The general complaint about the strat bridges is that they are too bright and thin. Believe me there the baseplate DOES NOT help, in fact makes things worse. But if you have a strat bridge pickup that you thin could use slight touch of tele kinda twang and increased highs and lows, well then it helps.

I tried a fralin base plate on various pickups, fralin blues sp, van zandt blues sp, surfer bridge and ant I custom bridge. The only time I really liked the results was with the ant I custom bridge. That is mine has a fralin baseplate.

I don't think it makes a gigantic differance but it does add about 5% more lows to the tone of a Strat bridge pickup. I've only tried it on the bridge pickup in a Fralin Vintage Hot set with a 7K bridge pickup. I'd think the diff would be more dramatic on the 9.5 to 10K Duncan Antiquity Custom bridge pickup Dr. Barlo mentioned. Lew

I tryed a Fralin baseplate under a fender fat 50 bridge pickup a few years ago and I really didn't like it..It seemed to make an already harsh sounding pickup even harsher...

I've never heard it make a Fralin bridge pickup harsher, but again, I've only tried it with Lindy's own single coils. I kind of liked the difference it made.

In truth, I like stronger Strat bridge pickups these days, like the Duncan Antiquitys at 9.5K to 10K. Or the Fralin Steel Pole 43 which won't take a bassplate anyway as the magnets are glued to the bottem of the pickup.

The Fralin Steel Pole 43 is the bridge pickup I use with my Fralin Vintage Hot neck and middle pickups.

Lew,

As I said above, my experience is the same as John's when it comes to the regular (i.e. 6.00-7.50K) strat bridges. It just simple makes them harsher, especially those with a5s. That includes Fralin's and Van Zandts too.

I used to the baseplate for my ant I custom (bridge)/ fralin vintage hot (neck and middle) set to increase the quack I get from the bridge/middle position. It worked.

Interesting. Never heard that one before. :) Wasn't my experience tho. :)

Here's Lindy's own description of the Fralin Bassplate: "A Bass Plate is an option for the bridge position on ALNICO poled pickups which will give you 10% more bass without affecting the mids or highs".

And here's a link to the Lindy's webpage with that description:

Hmmmm. this may take a little puzzling out. If i am thinking right, an "overwound" or hot pup will have less high end or at least less of the brittle high. As with the Ant I bridge. ??? maybe that is why it pairs well with that pup. I have the fat 50's and don't really like the bridge. I have the Surfers with the hotter wound bridge. I was wondering how the bassplate would affect them. Doesn't sound like the fat 50's would be a good match with a baseplate, but a hotter pup might do better. Hmmmmmmmmm

Well, I think if two trusted guys like Dr. Barlo and John both heard the bassplate make thier pickups sound harsh then it probably did...although I have never had that happen myself. Ever. And I've used the Bassplate on quite a few Fralin bridge pickups.

I guess its one of those YMMV type things...

It's only $10. Give it a try and find out for yourself if you like it or not.

I always have liked it.

I've been curious about this too. My two strats have Fat 50's and Surfers, and with the Fat 50's, the neck tone is killer, but to get the bridge where I like it, I keep the Fender Deltatone tone control backed off a bit.
