can anyone recommend me some of the best Zappa works to check out, in particular for guitar work, as with all the albums he's done I dont know where to start :smack:

Re: Frank Zappa

My favorite Zappa gtr tune of all time is: Watermelon in Easter Hay on the Joe's Garage album

Re: Frank Zappa

I love Montana..... i also love the live version of Sharleena from Can't Do That On Stage Anymore... volume 3 i think- Green cover.... anyways that version of Sharleena from the 1984 tour has Franks son who was 16 at the time ripping up the fretboard with his dad on the solo...... It is amazing! Favourite thing i have heard so far from Zappa.....

I don't have many Zappa albums..... I think my next cd will be his greatest hits.

Most of his albums have great musicianship. "Man From Utopia" features Steve Vai in his very early days.

Re: Frank Zappa

Good to see more people getting into Zappa. The "Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar" set is great but pretty heavy listening. We're Only In It For The Money, Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation, and On Stage vol. 3 are my favorites for vocal-oriented stuff (Zoot Allures and Sheik Yerbouti too). For instrumental I'd recommend Hot Rats and Jazz From Hell (the latter is pretty much all synth and no guitar, but great from a composition standpoint). A word of warning: being a Zappa fan gets expensive, you've been warned... :)

Go over his discography - it's massive.

Hot Rats - recorded in late 1968 - son of Mr. Green Genes has best guitar work. That album still blows me away.

On Jazz From Hell Vai gets credit for "Stunt Guitar"

Zappa rules...I was a big Vai fan as a young guitarist and that led me to Zappa. I love his stuff. Hot Rats, Bongo Fury, Apostrophe, Joe's Garage, etc. etc. Love that stuff!

Re: Frank Zappa

Over-Nite Sensation has some killer solos. Particularly Montana and Fifty-Fifty (this one is ****ing mental!).
Zoot Allures has some cool playing too.

But you can't really go wrong with any of Zappa's records. Except for the Synclavier stuff, which is cool by itself, but not so guitar-oriented.

Re: Frank Zappa

Jazz from hell, shut up and play yer guitar, shut up and play yer guitar some more, the return of the son of shut up and play yer guitar, or guitar.
