Franken Fat strat too bright! What to do.

The Evolution is one of the most aggressive pickups in history, period. If the bridge is "floating", and NOT backed-up against the body then........oh boy. Forget it.

Just moving the Evolution to a stoptail Charvel without a Floyd was enough to change that pickup completely for me. Worked wonders. I was literally shocked once I took it out of my Ibeenhad. My Charvel still has a tremolo unit, but it's backed-up, locked against the body of the guitar. Bass & sustain, anyone???

Hetfield's tone may have been clear and crisp, but it wasn't thin & wimpy, like Vai's. Floating bridge = ditch the Evolution.

You got that right Majestic!!! Got a vintage tremolo in the Frankenstrat and the EVO sucked in it. I put the Evo in the Les Paul and it makes a world of difference! Am leaving it there. Last night dropped the Invader in the bridge of the strat body and, although I'm not a big Invader fan, it sounds much better. Dark pickup in bright guitar works out well.

You see pics of Vai wailing on a whammy bar on his Jem with a Evo in it and ya thing it would work on most tremolo equiped guitars. Wrong!

Thanks Majestic! Not scratching my head any more.

David Kornblatt, welcome to everyone's Ignore List. You were warned.

I know this is from out in left-field, but I bet if you'd like the Breed. Fat like a Tone Zone, but while the bass & mids are the "stars" of those pickups, their EQ'd in different ways.

It should be fat enough, yet still have enough treble, depending on the amp, to play some metal. I mean the Breed shouldn't sound like mud, but it shouldn't be too bright either. I don't know.

You are not out in left field at all. I checked out the Breed bridge on the DiMarzio site and it looks like it would work fine. As the site says: Tech Talk: The Breed™ was designed to warm up and smooth out the sound of 25 1/2 scale trem guitars. The EQ is 4/9/8 which would problably work out.

One problem is I've spent a bunch of bucks on pickups and now have a Duncan Distortion and a DiMarzio Super Distortion sitting in boxes unused. Maybe I can off them on e-bay and then give the Breed a try. The muddy Invader will have to get us by for now. Another problem is that I can't get my kid to play anything except the Les Paul with the Evolution in it. He loves that setup. Very articulate.
