Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

I'm pretty sure he's been using JS1000's and 1200s which are loaded with Fred/PAF Joes, it's only very recently that he's started using the new JS2400's which have a Mo Joe in the bridge.

How can you be sure his guitars have those exact pickups in it? He's even admitted he's used Pearly Gates before. :scratchch

Although, no way of telling for sure what pickups he might be using in his records, but when you watch a many of his live shows (I did), very often the camera will zoom in close to his pickup cavity. It's then you can tell he is using Fred or Paf Pro or Mo' Joe, since Duncan pickups have different poles, and these particular Dimarzios poles have two rows of allen screws. But whether it's Fred or Mo' Joe.... :scratchch

Well, that's what I meant. I think he used (at whatever point) the Pearly Gates in the studio, not live. Lars Ulrich used a Gretch kick drum for years in the studio but is a long-time Tama endorser. That sort of stuff happens, when you are tone chasing. :)

Also in his San Francisco show, he is using 'Pearly' with pearly gates.

It's a distinct possibility that he has all his guitars outfitted with Mo Joes, no doubt about it. I just feel like Ibanez would have followed suit and put them stock in the JS models like they did with the PAF Joe. I can't think of one single reason why Ibanez would choose to update the neck pickup but not the bridge...unless Joe likes his new neck pickup but not his new bridge pickup.

Or maybe I just have a grudge against the Mo Joe 'cause I dropped 70 bucks on one and it sounds like white bread stuffed into a manilla envelope reading a dictionary cover to cover :banghead:

Whoa! Bad pup or that's how it is?

Nope, the pickup worked fine, I just really don't like it.

Dimarzio took one of my favorite pickups in their line and (IMO) totally ruined everything that made it cool...the Mo Joe is really good one paper, but really bad in practice

:lmao: That's a great description

That boring eh? Shame.

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

In usual strange DiMarzio fashion, the Fred is 10.3k but is 305mv output but the Mo'Joe is around 9.5k but puts out 320mv.

In my experience, the Mo'Joe is a very picky pickup. I put one in three guitars and here's what I got. First I put it in my 75 LP Custom, and it sounded like a chain saw was shredding through my head--and not in a good way. That's a pretty bright guitar though, and I chalk that up as the problem. I put it in a basswood SG copy and it sound very powerful, very hot, and had a hint of ice pick on the top end, but I never played it in a mix with either of those guitars. In this SG, it was a great sounding pickup to me...just not quite there. Finally, I put it in my 1973 Les Paul Deluxe and that's where it shined. It was almost like it was made for that guitar. Playing by myself, it sounded a little thin but in a mix it smoked. It sounded almost 3D like and had outstanding presence and tone. I sold the guitar a few months back and the guy who bought it said he's never taking it out because he loves it for the same reasons I did.

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

Yeah, it's probably a bad idea to have the poles facing the inside of the pickup cavity. I can imagine it would sound pretty dull... :sword:

:scratchch Hmmmm... may be we just discovered another kind of sound, mix between out of phase/parallel/coil split/notch position.......:eyecrazy:

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

Have you checked that other DiMarzio forum for opinions? ;)

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

Yes, but sometimes it's good to get a second opinion. :D

Sounds a bit like JB.:)

Joe was a JB player back in the day IIRC. A JB and '59n will do Joe with ease.

The Fred is cool, I like the JB better, and the PAF Joe is a '59n clone to my ears...except I like the '59n a little better also.

Re: Fred Vs Mo' Joe: Help me Decide

hello
i think mo joe can be good
but sh4-sh6/mo joe
who is the winner? lol with good clean and a lot of harmonics, fantastic in blues-rock-heavy metal solo
i don't play legato
i like warm sound, sustain, feedback, harmonics
