Free Stuff from gearpage!

Re: Free Stuff from gearpage!

In almost ALL cases, you'll level the binding with the fretboard and fret normally. That kind of decorative/protective edge is basically for the original frets only. It would be cool with stainless frets.

I've just received mine! :D

It's hard to determine what they're saying about the hand-carving of the top. At some points they elude to "this is how we do it on our higher end models" etc. So you don't know if you're looking at a custom shop style instrument, or if they're claiming that EVERY carved top is a hand-carved top. I doubt it. Hamer is one of the best of the business, no matter how you slice it, but it's hard to tell what they're staging and what's real, everyday production.
There isn't any real "Custom Shop." All the custom guitars are made in the same way as their standard models, except they just shoot a different color or find a nicer/different piece of wood. There really aren't a whole lot of "custom" options. I take "higher end models" to mean models that come with carved tops, and IIRC that's the term he used in person.

Re: Free Stuff from gearpage!

I filled it out last week (from the TGP link) and got my DVD yesterday. Haven't watched it yet.

FWIW: I've always said "hay-mer." I don't think it would ever be pronounced "hammer" unless it actually had two Ms, but I wouldn't fault someone for saying "Hah-mer" if they didn't know better.

Re: Free Stuff from gearpage!

I got one of these DVDs when I bought my standard. I had to send it with the guitar...that is a GAS inducing little vid to have laying around.

I too was upset they kinda didn't show anything but the studios and such being made. Would have liked to have seen some standards.

That said..if you think it loks great on video..you OWE it yourself to go out and experience a Hamer USA guitar...the quality and tone is just amazing...I had my issues with the Standard...but it was mostly just personal pref/nitpicking. It, BY FAR was the best crafted instrument I've ever experienced..even among it's direct competition (Gibbo, Jackson USA, PRS, etc etc). It was not an inexpensive instrument, but when ya see and play one for a bit, you'll realize they are more than worth the price they charge. Its just one of those guitars where ya lose your breath a little when ya open up the case, and smile like a little kid when ya plug it in.

I do miss my standard :(

Re: Free Stuff from gearpage!

I will confirm the sentiments on Hamer USA stuff being high-quality. I've owned PRS, Gibson, Carvin (and lots and lots of other stuff), and the Hamer USA guitars I have played are a cut above. They just feel more solid and alive.

That's not to say that those other builders are really inferior, especially PRS in terms of quality and consistency, but your average PRS just doesn't have all the vibe oozing from it like your average Hamer does.

I think it's got something to do with the fact that PRS strives (with notable success) to make all the guitars they make exactly the same, where Hamer strives to bring the unique character out of every one they build in a very loving and time-consuming way.

Just m2c.

Time is money, and they don't seem to care. They want to get it right. Great DVD overall.

When I saw Jol Dantzig's guru tour clinic he said that they only make three guitars each day. Compare that to PRS at over 60 a day and Gibson at 100s every day. I think they can hand carve them all.
