What if each fret had a pickup underneath and was then combined with all the other fret pups in order to create a massive, all phasey-wonky signal that would exhibit some interesting harmonic characteristics?

Re: Fret pups

One pickup gives you distinctive character based on its position.

A combination of two pickups gives some added nuances.

Three pickups together starts sounding flat and lifeless.

I’m pretty sure that from 21 to 24 pickups all at the same time would sound like crap. [emoji90]

Or maybe it starts sounding good again in some new way after a couple more?

If you have stopped taking your meds - get back on them ASAP.
If you are taking someone else's meds - stop NOW.

Re: Fret pups

There would be a lot of switches.
Actually, this isn't that crazy. There have been guitars with transducers embedded in the neck before- I think that is how the first sustainers worked. As far as more modern instruments go, I think a Teuffel guitar might have a microphone in the neck of the guitar connected to a switch, and when you press the switch, you get howling squealy feedback.

That's very interesting! I take it you don't remember the exact model of said guitar? I'll be doing some google then.

Re: Fret pups

I played with many ideas regarding getting a pickup under the fretboard (a few makers have done it) but in the end i just went for some ibanez neck simulation circuitry.

Ok i know this isn't what you're talking about but it did make me think of my precious odd ball. **** i love this thing it's become my main player.

What do you mean 3 pick ups starts sounding flat and lifeless?! I've installed a neck pick up on switch on my '98 American Standard Strat and having 3 pickups on at once makes it sound very sparkly compared to just having 2 pickups on at once.

I find that to be quite surprising as my experiences have been the exact opposite, but glad it works for you!

Re: Fret pups

I think the string pull when fretting would kill sustain

maybe one could play on both sides of the fretted note

Re: Fret pups

Why don't you go play while standing in the magnets in the Hadron Collider if you are curious about multi pickups. Dress warm.

Re: Fret pups

Given neck pickups are hard to get the mud from, I can only imagine how horrible pickups further down the neck would sound.

Not to mention how on earth you would turn them on or off based on what positions on the fretboard you were playing.

Yep - unmitigated disaster potential there - even on paper.
