What if each fret had a pickup underneath and was then combined with all the other fret pups in order to create a massive, all phasey-wonky signal that would exhibit some interesting harmonic characteristics?
One pickup gives you distinctive character based on its position.
A combination of two pickups gives some added nuances.
Three pickups together starts sounding flat and lifeless.
I’m pretty sure that from 21 to 24 pickups all at the same time would sound like crap. [emoji90]
Or maybe it starts sounding good again in some new way after a couple more?

There would be a lot of switches.
Actually, this isn't that crazy. There have been guitars with transducers embedded in the neck before- I think that is how the first sustainers worked. As far as more modern instruments go, I think a Teuffel guitar might have a microphone in the neck of the guitar connected to a switch, and when you press the switch, you get howling squealy feedback.
I think it was a Teuffel Tesla.

What do you mean 3 pick ups starts sounding flat and lifeless?!I've installed a neck pick up on switch on my '98 American Standard Strat and having 3 pickups on at once makes it sound very sparkly compared to just having 2 pickups on at once.
