Friend Of Mine Swears By The "Lollar" Pickups!

Pricey,but he swears these are the best pickups currently out there? Haven't tryed them,but he's hyping them up a bunch...Anyone else using the Lollars?Funny because this reminds me of the guys on the LPF that raved about the Rolphs,Timbuckers,etc..It's the flavor of the week on that forum,but if my friend says the Lollars are great,then they are!

I'm currently using Lollar P90s in my Gibson Firebird.

Lollar's soapbars are simply incredible.

In my opinion, Lindy Fralin does a GREAT job replicating the Gibson Soapbars, and giving you the option of custom windings and such, but Lollar is the only guy who has actually improved upon the traditional design. I feel like he took it one step further and made the pickup even better. Some traditionalists may disagree.

his P90s are definately "hi-fi" and more detailed, as people say. He did away with the steel bottom plate and spaceer bar. His polepieces make direct contact with the magnet, resulting in more high end clarity.

Ive only had experience with his P90s, but if the rest of his line is anything as good as the soapbars, then I'd say it lives up to the hype.

The term "hi fi" in guitar tone scares me and I tryed one of Keeley's pedals that he said was hi fi and I hated it,but I'm hearing great things about his pickups...My friend is using the P90,the higher output strat pickups and a humbucker in his PRS and he's raving about all 3...I'd be interested in either the single coils(Not sure which set)or the Imperial Humbucker..No time soon though.. :wink:

i would not say they are 'hi-fi'. i will describe them as having a full frequency response. really balanced with thumpy lows, creamy mids and adequate highs without sounding harsh. i have to say that jason's p-90s are very responsive and sensitive to volume and tone pot manipulations.

i reckon you should drop jason a mail. he is a nice guy and he loves talking pickups.

Thanks Dani...Actually I'm very happy with the SD pickups I've chosen over the years in the many guitars I own,but these Lollars are intriquing? My friend said the same thing about Jason as you've stated..I'm not having GAS over these Lollars though.. :dance:

Jason Lollar is a hell of a nice guy and has a vast knowledge about pickups. A friend of mine has got a set of Lallars (Tele bridge and Strat neck) in one of his Tele's and hasn't stopped talking about them since he got them in. As for the price, the Strat pickups are $1.00 more that what most guys sell an Antiquity single coil for and the Lollare are made to order to whatever specs you want.

I haven't heard them, but I want to try the Charlie Christian nek pickup for Tele's. Maybe it'll give the ol' SM-1 a run for it's money. :burnout:

Yeah, I guess most people say "hi-fi" when referring to active pickups like EMG...poor word choice. whoops.

Id say that compared to regular Gibson P90s, they sound less muffled and more articulate, but in NO way are they sterile or harsh. theyre warm and full as all heck.

I'm just going to throw this observation out there and then let it go: People are always finding a new manufacturer who's latest new thing is declared as the best ever. But it's all just a matter of taste. When you get into the rarified atmosphere of boutique guitars, amps and pickups there is no "best". Seymour, Lindy and Jason all make great pickups and if your tastes coincide with either Seymour's, Lindy's or Jason's then whoever is winding the pickup that sounds the way you've always wanted one to sound will be the guy who's making the greatest pickup ever: to you. I've heard nothing but raves about Jason's pickups but I have not heard them yet myself.

About 2 weeks ago I installed a set of Lollar P90's into my PRS SE Soapbar II guitar and this is fast becoming my favorite guitar for two reasons. The playability and now because of the tone. The SE is the first P90 equipt guitar that I've owned so I'll admit that the whole P90 thing is still a bit new to me. The guitar came equipt with Duncans but I don't know if they were a regular production model or a Duncan designed. What ever they just did'nt cut it for me. No matter what I did to the heights I could'nt get the drone out of the neck pickup and the bridge pickup lacked guts. The Lollars more than exceeded my expectations as they cured all that was wrong and then some. Like I said, I can't put this guitar down now because the tone is so incredable. Night and day differance.

(Don't get me wrong as I am NOT knocking Mr. Duncan and his work. I have a Fat Strat with the Blues Saraceno in the bridge and the Jazz neck model and this combination just kills! NO regrets with this setup at all).

I have not played Jason's pickups but he repaired, rewired and rewound my Stringmaster, and I couldn't have been more knocked out with the result. If his pups even approach in quality his service work, they're outstanding.

"Outstanding" pretty much is the jist of whatever I hear about Jason and his pickups! Worth trying one of these days,just not today! :13:

I Don't own any P90 instruments so it would be either the Humbuckers or the strat single coils that "might" interest me?

Fixed. You can get a strat pickguard cut for P90's, which I plan to do a few projects down the road. Swamp ash body, maple/rosewood neck, probably HSS with the S's being P90's.

I played a Strat once with a P-90 is the bridge...it was pretty bad ass!
